The author of Sweet Magnolias<\/em><\/a> has broken her silence on the show\u2019s shocking cancellation \u2014 and the subsequent backlash.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo many of you have expressed your disappointment about not just the cancellation of #Sweet Magnolias Netflix,\u201d Sherryl Woods<\/strong>, who wrote the books that inspired the show, captioned an Instagram post on Monday, September 21. \u201cBut [also] that you\u2019ll never know exactly what happened next for Annie and Ty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Woods weighed in on where she thought Annie<\/a> (Anneliese Judge<\/strong>) and Ty (Carson Rowland<\/strong>) would have ended up.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhile the storylines between TV and books never match exactly, they do get their happily-ever-after in the books,\u201d she noted. \u201cHome in Carolina is their story.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sweet Magnolias<\/em>, which premiered in 2020, is based on Woods\u2019 novels about three women who have been best friends since childhood as they navigate their romantic lives, careers and family.<\/p>\n

Before season 5 premiered in June, Us<\/em> broke the news that Rowland, 28, wouldn\u2019t reprise his role as Ty. Showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson exclusively told Us<\/em> that the actor made the \u201cdecision\u201d to sit out.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cIn his leaving, we wanted to make the best of the situation,\u201d she shared. \u201cAnd look at what happens when people leave the people they love to chase a dream.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anderson later told Deadline that the door was open for the actor to return.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll have to wait and see, won\u2019t we?\u201d Anderson teased about how the writers wanted to \u201cgive that story emotional weight, stakes, consequences\u201d for Annie. \u201cTo just pretend that nobody thinks about him, nobody asks about him, and that he\u2019s not thinking about them would have been insincere, I believe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Anderson added: \u201cHe\u2019s still out there trying to figure out what happens next, she\u2019s still in Serenity trying to figure out what happens next. And again, open doors we hope will lead to new information, different resolutions. Love isn\u2019t cut and dry. You don\u2019t just wake up one morning and say, I don\u2019t love this person anymore, and move on. It takes time.\u201d<\/p>\n

News broke earlier this month that Netflix<\/a> chose not to renew Sweet Magnolias for a sixth season. Instead, the streaming service ordered a new drama series from Anderson \u2014 with JoAnna Garcia Swisher set to executive produce and potentially star.<\/p>\n
