Over lunch at San Lorenzo in London \u2014 and using their nicknames for each other, Duch and Carlos \u2014 Spencer wrote, \u201cShe looked down at the table and said, \u2018Carlos, I\u2019m going to get divorced.\u2019 \u201c<\/p>\n
\u201cI was silent for a moment. I had known things were bad, but not this bad,\u201d Spencer continued. \u201c \u2018Well, Duch,\u2019 I carefully replied, \u2018you of course have my full support\u2026 I know you\u2019ll have thought this through. But my main worry is the public. I fear they won\u2019t forgive you. They\u2019ve bought into a fairytale, and I reckon they may \u00adwell \u2014 wrongly \u2014 blame you for destroying their fantasy.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe looked up at me, nodded, and said quietly: \u2018But, Carlos, my husband is in love with his valet.\u2019 I gulped. \u2018Well, I guess, in that case, you really don\u2019t have a choice,\u2019 \u201c he continued.
Spencer wrote that his sister did not name the staffer. \u201cIt was not important: the end of her marriage, and of her dreams, was.\u201d
During his marriage to Diana, Charles\u2019 valet was Michael Fawcett. For years, rumors circulated about the nature of their relationship. In 1996, former valet George Smith alleged that he was sexually assaulted by one of Charles\u2019 aides and claimed to have seen an incident involving a member of the royal family and a senior servant. At the time, many believed it was Charles and Fawcett.
