He was 56.<\/p>\n Duncan<\/strong>\u2018s mother Suzanne Sheik<\/strong> confirmed the sad news in a statement to The New York Times<\/a><\/em>. His cause of death was organ failure.<\/p>\n \u201cIt is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Duncan Sheik,\u201d a spokesperson for Duncan<\/strong> told People. \u201cThe world has a lost a singular talent, and deeply influential voice in music and theater. From his Grammy-nominated hit \u2018Barely Breathing\u2019 to his groundbreaking, Tony and Grammy Award-winning work on Spring Awakening<\/em>, Duncan\u2019s artistry touched many and leaves an indelible mark on the cultural landscape.\u201d<\/p>\n The statement continued, \u201cDuncan was a father, husband, son, brother, and friend. He will be remembered for his sensitivity, wit, intelligence, and depth of spirit he brought to those who knew and loved him. We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of love from his fans, friends, collaborators, and the artistic community. His musical legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. Duncan passed away last night surrounded by love.\u201d<\/p>\n Earlier this week, it was revealed that he was receiving medical treatment as he was in \u201ccritical but stable condition.\u201d<\/a> For the past several weeks, Duncan<\/strong> has made several references about being in a hospital on Instagram.<\/p>\n News of Duncan<\/strong>\u2018s passing comes just days before his new Off-Broadway musical Memoirs of Amorous Gentlemen<\/em> begins performances on September 25. Later this fall, Spring Awakening<\/em> is being revived for a major Off-Broadway production in November.<\/p>\n Spring Awakening<\/em>, which starred Lea Michele<\/strong><\/a> and Jonathan Groff<\/strong><\/a>, first opened on Broadway in 2006.
