The Barbie<\/em> movie is fast approaching \u2014 but titular star Margot Robbie<\/strong><\/a> didn\u2019t know if it would ever come to fruition.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cI was very scared it was going to be a no. At the time this was such a terrifying thing to take on. People were like,\u00a0You\u2019re going to do what?\u201d Robbie told Vogue<\/em><\/a> in May 2023 of her production company, LuckyChap, approaching Mattel about the project.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n Robbie noted that at the time, there wasn\u2019t a set concept in mind. \u201cWe of course would want to honor the 60-year legacy that this brand has. But we have to acknowledge that there are a lot of people who\u00a0<\/span>aren\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0fans of Barbie. And in fact, aren\u2019t just indifferent to Barbie. They actively\u00a0hate\u00a0Barbie<\/a>. And have a real\u00a0<\/span>issue\u00a0with Barbie. We need to find a way to acknowledge that,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n The actress, who stars in the comedy alongside Ryan Gosling<\/a>, Will Ferrell<\/a>, Dua Lipa<\/a>, Kate McKinnon<\/a>, America Ferrera<\/a>,<\/strong> Michael Cera<\/a>, Simu Liu<\/a><\/strong> and more, eventually accepted the role but shared that she \u201creally didn\u2019t even think about playing Barbie until years into developing\u201d the movie. Eventually, the concept came together when LuckyChap was given the green light \u2014 and after Robbie convinced Greta Gerwig<\/strong><\/a> to both direct the film and pen the script.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt felt sparky to me in some way that felt kind of promising,\u201d Gerwig told Vogue <\/em>in May 2023, adding that she would only agree to the job if her partner, Noah Baumbach<\/strong><\/a>, co-wrote it with her. \u201cI was the one who said,\u00a0Noah and I will do this.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThere really was this kind of open, free road that we could keep building<\/a>,\u201d Baumbach added. \u201cIt\u2019s like you\u2019re playing with dolls when you\u2019re writing something, and in this case, of course, there was this extra layer in that they\u00a0were\u00a0dolls.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
