The Summer I Turned Pretty<\/em><\/a> is a universal coming-of-age story \u2014 and one that depicts what happens when a girl finds herself caught between two brothers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The teen drama, which debuted in June 2022 and is based the book series of the same name, follows Belly Conklin (Lola Tung<\/strong><\/a>) as she navigates growing up \u2014 and figuring out her relationships with Conrad (Christopher Briney<\/strong><\/a>) and Jeremiah Fisher (Gavin Casalegno<\/b><\/a><\/span>). The three-book series features the siblings fighting for Belly\u2019s attention, with Belly exploring her feelings for both boys before making a final decision in the third novel.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While season 1 and season 2 of the Prime series \u2014 which premiered in July 2023 \u2013 loosely follow the narrative of the books, Casalegno revealed that Jenny Han<\/strong><\/a>, who wrote the novels and is showrunner of the TV adaptation, may choose to change how things play out<\/a> on\u00a0screen.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI do feel like there\u2019s a strong chance that that\u2019s a possibility<\/a>,\u201d the actor exclusively told Us Weekly<\/em>, adding that he doesn\u2019t think too hard about what the future of his character looks like while filming.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI try to keep it as real as possible in that regard. Obviously, I know where he ends up going and what ends up happening. But I don\u2019t emphasize \u2026 that. Because I think Jenny [Han]\u00a0writes it so well that I\u2019m able to kind of get there naturally without having to force it a certain direction,\u201d Casalegno told\u00a0<\/span>Us<\/i>. \u201cSo even though I know where he is going, I try to play it day by day because that\u2019s all we can do. [We can] just live in the moment and make the most of our time right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

For Han, it was about\u00a0looking at\u00a0her own novels through the eyes of her fans.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI approached it like, what do I think are the most important elements of the story to keep<\/a>? And what do the fans care the most about? I am able to pull from all the emails, letters, and comments I\u2019ve seen over the years from fans, so that\u2019s how we looked at this adaptation,\u201d she told Collider<\/em><\/a> in June 2022. \u201cWhat do the original fans care most about? And then, also for me, what\u2019s going to be most like fun and exciting to explore?\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As for where Briney and Casalegno stand, they both have unwavering loyalty to their own characters \u2014 no matter what. \u201cI\u2019m Team Conrad, bro. I might be biased, but I have to be,\u201d Briney told J-14<\/em><\/a> in June 2022. Casalegno, meanwhile, admitted that it\u2019s that a \u201ctough situation\u201d when picking sides, but he would \u201chave to be Team Jeremiah\u201d at the end of the day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tung, however, has a different approach to the situation altogether\u00a0\u2014 putting female empowerment above all else. \u201cI will forever be Team Belly,\u201d she told\u00a0the outlet at the time. \u201cI believe in her finding herself and going on this journey.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

When Belly arrives at Cousins during the pilot, both Conrad and Jeremiah are taken aback by how grown up she looks \u2013 and sparks immediately fly for both brothers.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A New and Unexpected Tension<\/span><\/h3>\n

While Belly has an easy and light-hearted dynamic with Jeremiah, there is a\u00a0<\/b>heaviness between her and Conrad in the first few episodes of season 1.<\/span><\/p>\n

Skirting around how they really feel, the twosome end up displaying serious jealousy. Belly throws shade at Conrad\u2019s girlfriend, Nicole, at a beach bonfire, while Conrad teases Belly by showing up on her date with Cam Cameron (David Iacono<\/strong>) at the drive-in movie theater. They later play together in a volleyball tournament, but Conrad ends up subbing in for Jeremiah after they start to lose. Seeing Conrad and Belly win their match and embrace, Jeremiah starts to wonder if Belly still has feelings for his brother.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
