The 61-year-old comedian and director spoke about Scott, 68, during a keynote conversation at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday (13.09.26), a day after the world premiere of his new film Misty Green. <\/p>\n
Chris was discussing his previous directorial effort, the 2014 comedy Top Five, which Scott produced before allegations about his treatment of employees led him to step away from producing in 2021.<\/p>\n
The comedian and actor said: \u201cBeing number three or four on the call sheet of a ginormous movie means you\u2019re going to have a lot of days off. I wrote (Top Five), and yeah, it\u2019s got a lot of Woody (Allen) in it. It\u2019s got a lot of Mike Leigh in it. It\u2019s got a lot of Alexander Payne in it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Chris wrote Top Five while working on Grown Ups 2, taking advantage of the downtime created by the comedy\u2019s large ensemble cast.<\/p>\n
\nThe film starred Chris as comedian and actor Andre Allen alongside Rosario Dawson, and marked his third feature as a director.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking at TIFF, Chris said: \u201cScott (Rudin) produced it, and he really pushed me in a way. I know people have whatever stories about Scott, (but) I need hard coaching.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAsked why he responded to that approach, Chris said: \u201cEverybody doesn\u2019t respond to a hug, you know what I mean? I got two daughters. One, you can smile her into excellence. The other one you gotta be like, \u2018Hey, what the f*** are we doing?\u2019\u2026 Scott really pushed me in a way I hadn\u2019t been pushed in a long time, and it was great. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI learned to not settle so for anything\u2026 especially when it comes to getting talent. (To) pursue the best of the best of the best for everything \u2013 in front of the camera, behind the camera. No compromise.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nScott was one of Hollywood and Broadway\u2019s most powerful producers before reports in 2021 detailed allegations of workplace bullying and abusive behaviour towards employees.<\/p>\n
\nHe subsequently stepped away from his film and theatre work and resigned from the Broadway League.<\/p>\n
\nScott returned to producing in 2025 after four years away, announcing a slate of theatre projects. <\/p>\n
\nHis Broadway comeback continued this year, although former employees have continued to criticise his return to the industry.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to The New York Times about the allegations and his conduct in 2025, Scott said: \u201cA lot of what was said was true. Some of what was said wasn\u2019t true. But I didn\u2019t feel there was any point in responding to all of it because what\u2019s the point of parsing bad behavior? It was bad behavior. I own it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI don\u2019t think I was ever really in the dark about why I was rough on people. I knew why I was rough on people. For a long time, it seemed like a price I could live with.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nScott\u2019s producing credits include No Country for Old Men, The Social Network and There Will Be Blood, while his Broadway productions have included The Book of Mormon, To Kill a Mockingbird and Hello, Dolly!.<\/p>\n
\nChris\u2019s comments came as he returned to filmmaking with Misty Green, his first feature as director since Top Five.<\/p>\n
\nThe Hollywood-set drama stars Rosalind Eleazar as an Emmy-winning actor whose career has stalled and who is attempting to secure another major role. <\/p>\n
\nChris wrote and directed the film and also appears in it.<\/p>\n
\nThe film received its world premiere at TIFF on Saturday and is due to be released in the US on 9 October.<\/p>\n
