The \u2018Praising You\u2019 singer, 32, wed \u2018Thor\u2019\u00a0filmmaker Taika Waititi, 47, last year, but only told fans this January, and said she loved how she had \u201cno filter\u201d when recording her latest release as she was running on a few hours sleep after a heavy night of drinking.<\/p>\n
She told Capital Breakfast when asked if her \u2018You and I\u2019 tune was written the day following her nuptials: \u201cYes, I was very hungover\u2026 the producer that I wanted to work with was only available the day after I got married.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd I was thinking, \u2018Ahh, I can\u2019t cancel it.\u2019 And so I walked in. I said, \u2018Listen, I just got married and I\u2019m really hungover. I don\u2019t know how this is gonna go down. But I don\u2019t want to miss this session. So let\u2019s do it.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd he was like, \u2018Okay, well, let’s just sing about you getting married.\u2019<\/p>\n
\n\u201cI said, \u2018Alright, cool, let\u2019s write an ultimate wedding song. And actually, that’s my favourite song on the album.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRita\u2019s new album is also called \u2018You and I\u2019, and she said when asked what Taika thought about her getting to work 24 hors after they tied the knot: \u201cI snuck out. I think I only got like two, three hours of sleep. And then I went in and I actually referenced all my favourite love songs within this love song.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo it was trying to make the ultimate love song. So actually, it worked wonders because there was no filter. When you’re hungover you just sort of like say what you want.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRita also said her record is about \u201cfinding yourself, self-discovery and self-love\u201d and is \u201creintroducing myself to the music business\u201d.<\/p>\n
\nThere is also a song on the record dedicated to her mum Vera, who was treated for cancer \u2013 a disease also survived by her husband\u2019s mother.<\/p>\n
\nRita said about paying tribute to her mum in music: \u201cI think she would have been really mad at me if I didn’t do that. And it\u2019s just about appreciation really, and just kind of reintroducing myself to the music business.\u201d<\/p>\n
