While OpenAI has filed confidentially for an IPO<\/a>, the company will not be going public this year<\/a>, according to CEO Sam Altman.<\/p>\n Altman was interviewed recently<\/a> by Fortune editor in chief Alyson Shontell; amidst the fallout from the OpenAI-HuggingFace hack<\/a>, as well as broader discussions about AI safety<\/a>, Shontell asked whether OpenAI still feels pressure to \u201cmove really fast\u201d due to its IPO plans.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not rushing into an IPO,\u201d Altman said. \u201cI actually think that given everything happening with safety, right now would be an ill-advised moment to go public.\u201d<\/p>\n Instead, he insisted that OpenAI will go public \u201cwhen we\u2019re ready, which is when the business is ready, when we feel ready from what the moment is like in society with this technology.\u201d When pressed on whether that means the IPO isn\u2019t happening in 2026, Altman replied, \u201cI would say not 2026, yeah. We\u2019ve got a lot of stuff to do.\u201d<\/p>\n
