The 77-year-old singer told Joe Rogan on his podcast that the tragic accident occurred when he and his band went to Vietnam in 1968 to perform for American soldiers out there – with the girls in the band helping to \u201cremind them [the soldiers] of home\u201d. <\/p>\n
They were out there \u201cfor about four months\u201d, with Rick calling it an \u201cinsane\u201d way to make money, as he went on to recall one incident when he got caught up in a \u201cfreaky\u201d attack. <\/p>\n
He said: \u201cWe met these guys, and we really got along well, and we stayed overnight with them, and we all got in the bunkers, in the perimeter bunkers, and I stayed in the radio shack, and we got attacked, and I\u2019m throwing mortars down the freaking tube of the radio shack.<\/p>\n
\t\t\t<\/p>\n
\u201cThe hardest thing for me was that I had thrown a mortar down, and it had hit somebody, and they came in the next day and said, \u2018Hey, you got one. You got one\u2019.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRick went on to say that the tragedy is still hard for him to accept. <\/p>\n
\nHe continued: \u201cThat still has a hard place to land in me, you know? That\u2019s really kind of the one thing I brought back with me that I couldn\u2019t really find a place for that to land\u2026.\u2028\u201cIt\u2019s hard for me to kind of face that I was responsible for the end of a life, even though it\u2019s distant, and it\u2019s war.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cAnd I didn\u2019t really have anything to do with it and didn\u2019t really know what I was doing\u2026 But it was… pretty heavy when I think about the reality of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nRick also told Joe that being involved in the attack had initially felt like he was in \u201cthe movies\u201d, as he recalled hearing a radio airing a warning stating tat there were no \u201cfriendlies\u201d in the area. <\/p>\n
\nHe was then asked if he wanted to \u201cthrow some mortars down the tube\u201d, and added: \u201cAnd it was John Wayne time, you know. I mean, as a young kid, I didn\u2019t really understand what I was doing.\u201d<\/p>\n
