The 31-year-old “Savage” superstar spoke out about her recent breakup in her September cover story, told exclusively to InStyle<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

During the conversation, she addressed her recent breakup with the 36-year-old NBA star, revealed her non-negotiables in a relationship, and discussed self-worth, navigating fame, going to therapy and more.<\/p>\n

On her recent breakup with NBA star, Klay Thompson:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt was very rough\u2026 What’s meant for you is always going to work out. And if something is constantly making you feel uncomfortable, just on edge all the time, you probably are not supposed to be there. God will always make you uncomfortable when something is not meant for you. I think I just kept trying to make pieces fit that didn’t belong, trying to fit myself into someone else\u2019s life. I was losing myself a little bit. I am now in the space of finding me<\/em> again.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot be disrespected. I cannot be a person who is not gonna be me<\/em>. I cannot not<\/em> go to work. I’m going to be Megan Thee Stallion<\/strong>\u2026You will not disrespect me. And you will be thankful. Period.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m trying my best\u2026I feel like I’ve been put through the washing machine and the dryer with tins, shovels, and a cactus.\u201d <\/p>\n

On what she views as non-negotiables in a relationship:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTrust, fidelity, and respect are non-negotiable for me in a relationship and when those values are compromised, there\u2019s no real path forward.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cI love being me. I love rapping. I love interacting with my fans. I love shooting music videos. I’m not a person who is in the house 24-7. I’m never going to be that. And whoever dates me is gonna have to just understand, like, she is her own person. She’s her own boss. I cannot be minimized. I will not be behind any man. I will have a partner. I will be equals with my partner. I’m never gonna take the backseat to anything. So just going forward, I think I’ve just learned this is the type of person that I want to be with, this is what I will tolerate, this is what I won’t tolerate. And if you can’t take that, we just gotta respectfully go our separate ways.\u201d<\/p>\n

On self-worth following a toxic relationship:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cPeople cheating on you, that doesn’t have anything to do with you. You\u2019re not less attractive. You’re not less of a good person. Even though it might feel like that. Oh my gosh, why me? Why am I not enough? Cause it could definitely feel like, Why am I not enough?\u201d<\/p>\n

On separating her personal life from her performer life:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThe more famous I got, the more I realized I had to separate my personal life from my performer life. I was just giving out trust so freely. I was making myself so available to people and going out of my way to do things for people who wouldn’t do those same things for me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cEverybody doesn’t deserve you. But I wanted everybody to like me\u2026I was able to place some things in Megan Thee Stallion <\/strong>and save Megan Pete <\/strong>for special people.\u201d<\/p>\n

On navigating fame and going to therapy:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI finally have reached a point in my life and in my career where I learned that people who don’t like you, there’s nothing you can do to make them like you. I don’t care\u2026I’m leaning on the people who do like and love me and who are Hotties. I can’t control what you do. Just like you can’t control what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not an anime character, despite what some people really do think\u2026I’m more grown-up now, I’ve been to therapy. I’m still<\/em> in therapy. I’ve been to a facility where I did a bunch of different therapy.\u201d<\/p>\n

On becoming the Mariah Carey of summer:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI want to be the Mariah<\/strong> of Summer\u2026I love Mariah Carey<\/strong>. Mariah<\/strong> is<\/em> Christmas. As soon as November starts, we just hear Mariah<\/strong> hit that high note. Boom. That’s her s–t. Me, June 21st. As soon as summer starts, boom, it’s Megan<\/strong><\/em>\u2026I\u2019m not playing.\u201d<\/p>\n
