Two more news organizations are suing OpenAI and Microsoft over the supposed use of their journalism to train AI.<\/p>\n
A lawsuit<\/a> filed by The Seattle Times and Newsday argued that with the advent of AI, the journalism industry could become \u201cbroken beyond repair.\u201d The lawsuit described generative AI as \u201ca snake eating its own tail\u201d that could \u201cdestroy the very organizations\u201d that produce the content it\u2019s trained on.<\/p>\n \u201cAI products like ChatGPT and CoPilot are touted as producers of content, but in fact they are rapacious consumers, devouring human-authored content and delivering back to the world copies and derivative imitations of that same original content they consumed to achieve their commercial objectives,\u201d the lawsuit said.<\/p>\n Back in 2023, The New York Times sued OpenAI and its partner\/investor Microsoft<\/a> over alleged copyright infringement; other publications have followed suit as the case continued. The Seattle Times\u2019 lawsuit is particularly notable because Microsoft and OpenAI have funded some of the organization\u2019s journalism projects and fellowships.<\/p>\n A Microsoft spokesperson told GeekWire<\/a> that the company is \u201csurprised by the lawsuit\u201d but is \u201calways happy to sit down and explore solutions to this type of dispute.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
