Andrew Garfield<\/strong><\/a> made headlines more than a decade ago when he suggested that a gay Spider-Man<\/strong><\/a> should exist in the cinematic universe. Now, he’s doubling down on those comments. <\/p>\n

The 43-year-old actor played the superhero in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man<\/em> and the sequel in 2014. <\/p>\n

In a 2013 interview, Andrew<\/strong> suggested Spider-Man get a male love interest. <\/p>\n

Referring to a conversation he had with a Spider-Man<\/em> producer, Andrew<\/strong> told EW<\/em>, \u201cI was kind of joking, but kind of not <\/em>joking about MJ… I was like, \u2018What if MJ is a dude?\u2019 Why can\u2019t we discover that Peter is exploring his sexuality? It\u2019s hardly even groundbreaking!\u2026 So why can\u2019t <\/em>he be gay? Why can\u2019t <\/em>he be into boys?\u201d<\/p>\n

At the time, Andrew<\/strong> suggested Michael B. Jordan<\/strong><\/a> for the role, saying that he was “obsessed” with the actor “since The Wire. <\/em>He\u2019s so charismatic and talented. It\u2019d be even better\u2014we\u2019d have interracial bisexuality!\u201d<\/p>\n

In a 2026 update, Andrew<\/strong> is standing by those comments. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was an exercise in rebellion that I felt passionate about,\u201d Andrew<\/strong> told Entertainment Weekly<\/a><\/em>. \u201cI just still believe that anyone can be in that suit.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cThat\u2019s the point of why it\u2019s such a kind of universally beloved character, one of the greatly beloved characters in the history of fiction, is because you don\u2019t see skin color, you don\u2019t see gender, you don\u2019t see sexuality. Anyone can project themselves into that suit.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI like the idea of a place where everyone is being honored and everyone is being included, and it was just a kind of act of saying, \u2018Well, why not?\u2019 And you\u2019ll be telling on yourself if you have a strong opinion either way,” he added. <\/p>\n

Shailene Woodley<\/strong><\/a> was supposed to play MJ in The Amazing Spider-Man 2<\/em>, but was cut from the movie. She actually just made rare comments about being deleted<\/a> from the project. <\/p>\n
