\nDirector Greta, 39, who co-wrote the film with her filmmaker partner Noah Baumbach, 53, admitted at the premiere the project had sent on an emotional rollercoaster. <\/p>\n
\nShe added: \u201cIt\u2019s so exciting but I also feel this ever-present wave of like, \u2018Oh no, I\u2019m going to cry\u2019, and then I\u2019m like, \u2018Don\u2019t cry, it\u2019s only amazing.\u2019 <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut it is \u2013 it\u2019s a lot\u2026 it\u2019s incredible, but it\u2019s a lot of energy.” <\/p>\n
\nGreta added Barbie creator Mattel was a joy to work with, saying: \u201cI honestly can\u2019t believe they let us make this movie, but they were really brave and they really allowed us to have creative freedom with their beloved brands.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nRyan has said his Ken character would relate to his childhood self, who was famously captured in a dancing contest and was part of the Disney Channel\u2019s \u2018Mickey Mouse Club\u2019. <\/p>\n
\nHe told GQ about empathising with the Ken doll he found chucked away by his daughters: \u201cI did see him, like, face down in the mud outside one day, next to a squished lemon, and it was like, this guy\u2019s story does need to be told, you know?\u201d <\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cThere\u2019s something about this Ken that really, I think, relates to that version of myself. Just, like, the guy that was putting on Hammer pants and dancing at the mall and smelling like Drakkar Noir and Aqua Net-ing bangs. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI owe that kid a lot. I feel like I was very quick to distance myself from him when I started making more serious films. But the reality is that, like, he\u2019s the reason I have everything I have.\u201d <\/p>\n
\nRyan thinks he has given his version of Ken as much of a story as possible, saying: \u201cKen \u2013his job is beach. For 60 years, his job has been beach. What the f*** does that even mean?… and everyone was fine with that, for him to have a job that is nothing. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut suddenly, it\u2019s like, \u2018No, we\u2019ve cared about Ken this whole time.\u2019 No, you didn\u2019t. You never did. You never cared. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cBarbie never f***** with Ken. That\u2019s the point. If you ever really cared about Ken, you would know that nobody cared about Ken. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cSo your hypocrisy is exposed. This is why his story must be told. I care about this dude now. I\u2019m like his representative: \u2018Ken couldn\u2019t show up to receive this award, so I\u2019m here to accept it for him.\u2019\u2009\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
