\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Much like the cottage in Heated Rivalry<\/strong><\/a><\/em> is Shane Hollander\u2019s private escape, it\u2019s the same for the home\u2019s real-life owner. <\/p>\n Toronto-based doctor Michael Kutryk <\/strong>is breaking his silence and opening up about allowing the show\u2019s production to film at his Muskoka retreat, as well as a return for season two, despite speculation that the show may have to find a new cottage to film at.<\/p>\n Michael<\/strong>\u2018s home was tracked down by a location scout for season one, who reached out to the home\u2019s architect and then connected with the doctor. <\/p>\n He says producers told him the show had a \u201cvery small budget,\u201d and he agreed to a low price that he says was \u201calmost nothing,\u201d which he nearly regretted. <\/p>\n \u201cNot long before filming began,\u201d Michael<\/strong> recalled to HGTV<\/a>, \u201cI was sitting out on the front stoop and all of a sudden these black SUVs pulled up, and [the crew members] started saying, \u2018This is where we\u2019ll put the porta-potties. This is where we\u2019ll put the outdoor kitchen.\u2019 I said, \u2018Wait a minute, I thought this was supposed to be a small production? How many people are gonna be here?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Roughly 45 people were to be on site, which is small for normal production standards, but it \u201cdid not seem small to me!\u201d Michael<\/strong> shared. \u201cI had never imagined so many people.<\/p>\n \u201cBut they promised me it would just be for two days during the middle of the week, when I wouldn\u2019t usually be using the house anyway, so I gave in.\u201d<\/p>\n He then inquired about what the show was.<\/p>\n \u201cThe producer said, \u2018It\u2019s a series based on a book by a Canadian author [Rachel Reid<\/strong><\/a>], and it\u2019s about hockey.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n Michael<\/strong> then listened to the audiobook and was quite surprised when a scene turned erotic in the first chapter.<\/p>\n \u201cMy jaw just dropped as I listened,\u201d he said with a laugh. \u201cThe pretty explicit nature of the book made me wonder just\u00a0what<\/em>\u00a0they\u2019d be filming \u2026 and showing!\u201d <\/p>\n By then, it was too late to back out on, with Michael<\/strong> saying, \u201cI just thought, OK, they\u2019re gonna film what they\u2019re gonna film. What\u2019s done is done.\u201d<\/p>\n While Michael<\/strong> wasn\u2019t present during filming, he shares that what you see on the show is exactly how his cottage looks in real life, aside from a few paintings that had to be taken down. <\/p>\n \u201cThat\u2019s pretty much all my stuff there in the house,\u201d the doctor said. \u201cThey changed virtually nothing. I did have to take down all the artwork, because if it\u2019s filmed and the artist sees it, the show would have to pay for it.\u201d<\/p>\n But, for that steamy scene with Shane and Ilya on the bed, \u201cthey did swap out the mattress for that scene.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cI did a little bit of soul searching about allowing them to come back,\u201d Michael <\/strong>shared. \u201cI know they need it, and I realize I [could] be difficult and try to squeeze them, but I [couldn\u2019t] bring myself to do that. When they called, they said, \u2018How much do you want?\u2019 First, I told them they scratched my table, then I named a very reasonable price. They were shocked and appreciative. I actually didn\u2019t even get them to replace my table.\u201d<\/p>\n As for season one, Michael also admits he was surprised at how much of the cottage was shown in the episode.<\/p>\n \u201cI was really surprised at how much of the house Jacob <\/strong>[<\/strong>Tierney<\/strong>]<\/a> showed,\u201d Michael<\/strong>\u00a0said. \u201cI thought they would just show little vignettes of it. I was amazed they highlighted the cottage in all of its non-expansiveness \u2014 that it\u2019s not huge or grand or sprawling. They even admit that only one bedroom has an en suite bathroom \u2026 [It\u2019s] really something; they actually show it\u2019s not a mansion.
