Then, at the end of July, a downturn in AI stocks <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/31\/leopold-aschenbrenner-situational-awareness-fund-fire-sale.html\" target=\"_blank\">erased billions<\/a> of dollars in value at the firm. Now, federal regulators are reportedly probing the company as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/08\/24\/business\/sec-situational-awareness-investigation.html\" target=\"_blank\">reports that<\/a> the Securities and Exchange Commission has been subpoenaing banks that did business with the hedge fund. The subpoenas focus on the banks that supervised the fund\u2019s trading and that channeled funding to support it, the outlet says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government reportedly warned the banks to \u201cpreserve any information\u201d about the hedge fund, though it noted that Situational Awareness has not been accused of any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Situational Awareness did not respond to TechCrunch\u2019s request for comment but told the Times that scrutiny of high-profile funds is to be expected, and that it would \u201ccooperate to the fullest extent with any regulatory request.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company, which very publicly hitched its wagon to AI\u2019s star, may serve as a cautionary tale about the industry\u2019s supposedly unstoppable trajectory.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/08\/24\/situational-awareness-star-ai-hedge-fund-that-nearly-imploded-now-being-probed-by-the-sec\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Situational Awareness, the AI focused hedge fund that was Wall Street\u2019s fleeting obsession, is having a very bad month.
