In a tell-all interview, Hayden Panettiere<\/strong><\/a>\u2018s estranged mother, Lesley Voge<\/strong>l, broke down her daughter\u2019s relationship with Brian Hickerson in the months leading up to her death.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe knew that Brian was toxic,\u201d Vogel, 70, said on the Monday, August 24, episode of Good Morning America<\/em>. \u201cShe knew she had to get him out of her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Vogel flew out to be with her daughter one year before her death, staying for six weeks before learning that Panettiere had reconciled with Hickerson again.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I got the phone call from her saying, \u2018I\u2019m going to be with the person I love.\u2019 \u2026 I just lost it,\u201d Vogel recalled. \u201cI could not believe that she had gone that far back, that he had been successful in reeling her back in, with all of the things he had done to her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tHayden Panettiere spoke openly about her estrangement from her mother, Lesley Vogel, in the months leading up to her death in August 2026. \u201cUnfortunately, we don\u2019t have a relationship right now,\u201d Panettiere exclusively told Us in May 2026. \u201cBut that doesn\u2019t mean that I don\u2019t leave the door open for the opportunity to present itself [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Taking the advice of her therapist, Vogel gave Panettiere an ultimatum about her relationship with Hickerson, telling her daughter she wouldn\u2019t speak to her if Hickerson was still in her life.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI needed it. I needed to have that pocket of time,\u201d she continued on Monday, reflecting on her estrangement from Panettiere. \u201cI did not by any stretch of the imagination think that this was going to happen to Hayden. \u2026 Maybe I didn\u2019t want to.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actress started dating Hickerson in 2018<\/a>. He was arrested for domestic violence that same year after an alleged argument with Panettiere. (Hickerson was charged with felony domestic violence, which resulted in a prosecutor-requested protective order. The charges were dropped the following year.)<\/p>\n

Hickerson was arrested again in 2020 after allegedly punching Panettiere in the face. At the time, Hickerson served 33 days in prison and was also placed on four years of probation and required to pay a $500 fine.<\/p>\n

The pair\u2019s tumultuous relationship was on and off. A source recently told Us that Panettiere \u201chad a very hard time cutting Brian out of her life,\u201d noting that she and Hickerson \u201cpretty much always remained in contact\u201d even while broken up.<\/p>\n

Panettiere, for her part, opened up to Us<\/em> about the challenges she faced in her relationship with Hickerson just months before her death.<\/p>\n

Panettiere moved on with Hickerson in 2018 after her split from fianc\u00e9 Wladimir Klitschko. The actress and Klitschko began dating in 2009. The pair briefly broke up in 2011 but got engaged two years later. They welcomed daughter Kaya in December [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cGetting an abusive person out of your life is like trying to rip a weed out that is so entangled into your life,\u201d she said in her May cover story. \u201cEvery time you pull it out, another weed pops back up and you\u2019re like, \u2018I thought I killed this.\u2019 They always manage to find a way to slither back into your life, even if you\u2019re an incredibly strong-willed person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Panettiere also referenced her estrangement from Vogel at the time, adding, \u201cUnfortunately, we don\u2019t have a relationship right now. But that doesn\u2019t mean that I don\u2019t leave the door open for the opportunity to present itself one day. It\u2019s hard for me to say, but I\u2019ve chosen to be brutally honest.\u201d<\/p>\n
