A mysterious new AI model called Ox Alpha has driven certain corners of the internet into a frenzy of speculation about who actually built it.<\/p>\n
The free model was released on OpenRouter<\/a> on Thursday, where it was described as \u201ca reasoning model designed for coding, sustained agentic work, and production workload.\u201d On X, Stripe CEO Patrick Collison (whose company is acquiring OpenRouter<\/a>) described Ox Alpha<\/a> as \u201cvery impressive.\u201d<\/p>\n So who\u2019s actually behind Ox Alpha? The OpenRouter listing described it as a \u201cstealth model\u201d and said it was \u201cdeveloped and operated by a third-party provider who has chosen to remain anonymous during this preview.\u201d<\/p>\n Unsurprisingly<\/a>, much of the speculation has revolved around China. AI analyst Andrew Curran posted on Friday<\/a> that the initial speculation focused on the GLM models developed by Chinese company Z.ai<\/a>, but \u201cthis morning people seem less sure of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n Similarly, an article on Wccftech<\/a> first suggested that the evidence pointed to GLM, but an update suggested that Ox Alpha could be an unreleased version of Microsoft\u2019s MAI. And on Reddit, there\u2019s at least one post<\/a> declaring that Ox Alpha \u201ccan\u2019t be the Chinese,\u201d while another expressed \u201chigh confidence\u201d<\/a> that it is, in fact, Chinese.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
