Anne Hathaway<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out publicly following news that Julie Andrews<\/strong><\/a> will not be returning for The Princess Diaries 3<\/strong><\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n

The 90-year-old icon starred in the first two films, 2001\u2019s The Princess Diaries<\/em> and 2004\u2019s The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement<\/em>, as Queen Clarisse Renaldi. In a new interview, Julie<\/strong> confirmed that she is “not going to be in”<\/a> the upcoming third movie.<\/p>\n

While appearing at D23<\/em> last weekend, Anne<\/strong>, who will be reprising the role of Mia Thermopolis in the film, reacted to Julie<\/strong>‘s announcement.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, I just want to say if she has a change of heart, we\u2019re down,\u201d Anne<\/strong> told Entertainment Tonight<\/em><\/a>. \u201cBut we also want to be respectful. For goodness sakes, if anybody has contributed to the world of entertainment and to our collective joy, it\u2019s her. Whatever she wants, we completely understand. We did push really hard to see if she would want to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for her hopes for the third movie, Anne<\/strong> said, \u201cI just want it to be fun. The women who were six when the first one came out \u2014 a lot of whom are now mothers themselves, maybe even with six-year-olds \u2014 I want them to feel like they\u2019re bringing their children to something that mattered to them.”<\/p>\n

Anne<\/strong> recently said they had a story breakthrough.<\/p>\n

\u201cI can say I think we had a story breakthrough,\u201d she shared on SiriusXM\u2019s Radio Andy<\/em><\/a> back in July. \u201cI think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on\u2026we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is gonna be the one.\u201d<\/p>\n
