Matthew Rhys<\/strong><\/a> weighed in on the chance of working with Keri Russell<\/strong> <\/a>on Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> \u2014 or any other project \u2014 after their beloved collaboration on The Americans<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, Keri and I discussed that. And then I discussed coming on The Diplomat<\/em> and then playing Tom Loftis on The Diplomat<\/em>, which is usually met with silence,\u201d Rhys, 51, joked during an exclusive interview with Us<\/em> at Brooklyn Bridge Marina<\/a> on Tuesday, August 18, for the Brunswick Boat Group Event<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Rhys enjoyed the idea<\/a> of sharing the screen with Russell, 50, again.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s the danger [though] if you\u2019re trying to recreate something,\u201d he told Us<\/em> about the couple not being in a rush to work together unless it felt like a good fit for both of them creatively. \u201cIf the right project came about and that made sense for us to be both in it. Because I think there\u2019s a degree of, \u2018Oh, you know why they\u2019re doing it.’\u201d<\/p>\n

The Felicity alum and the Welsh actor played undercover Russian spies Elizabeth and Philip Jennings on the FX drama, which aired from 2013 to 2018. Rhys added: \u201cIf it made sense, absolutely. I\u2019d love to.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Americans<\/em>, which ran from 2013 to 2018, followed Elizabeth (Russell) and Philip Jennings (Rhys) as two Soviet KGB intelligence officers posing as an American married couple living in a Virginia suburb of Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n

Rhys and Russell met while working on the critically acclaimed<\/a> FX series and have been together ever since. They both branched out to different roles since their days on The Americans<\/em>, with Russell being nominated for her work on The Diplomat<\/em> and Rhys for his efforts on Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was fortunate enough to produce on Widow\u2019s Bay and they were very gracious enough to include me,\u201d Rhys told Us about being involved behind the scenes as well. \u201cSo I enjoy that inclusion. It feels like you\u2019re an adult being asked to the adult\u2019s table. But I also love the shock of reading and going, \u2018Oh my God, I wasn\u2019t expecting that.’\u201d<\/p>\n

While Rhys doesn\u2019t know what comes next after Widow\u2019s Bay<\/em> got renewed<\/a> for season 2 \u2014 and scored 19 Emmy nominations \u2014 he doesn\u2019t mind speculating wildly.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe question I\u2019ve been asking Yana Grebenyuk Katie [Dippold]<\/strong> the most is, \u2018What is the curse? The monster? The island? What is it?\u2019 he noted. \u201cSo I\u2019m so intrigued as to whether it\u2019s something physical and tangible to be reasoned with or something inside us. I have no idea. I just know I\u2019m glad I\u2019m not writing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued: \u201cThere\u2019s a part of me that wants Hamish Linklater\u2019s character, Richard, to come back. So I kind of want that to be the curse. He keeps knocking on my door and I\u2019m always like, \u2018What?\u2019 And he is the curse and always ever present. I think there could be a lot of fun with that.\u201d<\/p>\n

As Rhys awaits the scripts for season 2<\/a>, he is keeping busy by partnering with Brunswick Corporation in honor of the company\u2019s latest innovations across boating, propulsion, navigation and marine technology.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember thinking how calm it was. I think how calm water is in general and just thinking, \u2018Oh, it\u2019s just such a lovely way to spend some time,’\u201d Rhys recalled how he fell in love with boating. \u201cYou\u2019re just looking at the water.\u201d<\/p>\n
