Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos<\/strong> is sharing new insight into why Mindhunter<\/strong><\/a><\/em> never returned for a third season.<\/p>\n

The crime thriller, starring Jonathan Groff<\/strong><\/a>, Holt McCallany<\/strong>, and Anna Torv<\/strong>, released two seasons between 2017 and 2019. Although it was placed on indefinite hold in 2020, fans have continued asking whether its unfinished story could ever continue.<\/p>\n

While appearing at The Indian Express’ Express Adda event<\/a> in New Delhi, Ted <\/strong>was asked to name a Netflix project that he wished had received another installment.<\/p>\n

He chose David Fincher<\/strong>‘s Mindhunter<\/em>, revealing, “We always anticipated there would be a third season.”<\/p>\n

According to Ted<\/strong>, David<\/strong> became occupied with his 2020 Netflix movie Mank<\/em>, per Collider<\/a>. The executive explained that the meticulous filmmaker didn’t want to divide his attention between two projects, causing plans for Mindhunter<\/em> to be repeatedly delayed.<\/p>\n

Ted<\/strong>‘s account adds another part to the explanation David <\/strong>previously offered for the show’s fate.<\/p>\n

In a 2020 interview with Vulture<\/a>, David<\/strong> described the series as an exhausting commitment that required 90-hour workweeks. He also said its audience was difficult to reconcile with its production costs, explaining that “dollars have to equal eyeballs.”<\/p>\n

The filmmaker reiterated in 2023 that Mindhunter <\/em>was expensive and had not attracted a large enough audience for Netflix to justify another season.<\/p>\n

Holt <\/strong>once offered fans a little bit of hope in 2025 when he revealed that David <\/strong>had discussed potentially continuing the story through three two-hour movies<\/a>. The actor said writers were working on the idea but stressed it was only a possibility and would depend upon David <\/strong>approving the scripts.<\/p>\n

No Mindhunter <\/em>movies have been greenlit as of August 2026, but the show’s first two seasons remain available to stream on Netflix.<\/p>\n
