For one reason or another, you&#8217;ve decided that it&#8217;s not worth paying the fee to keep your card for another year. Or maybe it&#8217;s <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/canceling-card-affects-fico-score\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a credit card you <!-- -->no longer use<\/a><\/span> or want, so you&#8217;re considering closing the account.<\/p>\n<p>Your first inclination might be to cancel your card. However, other options exist: You could downgrade or product change your card instead.<\/p>\n<p>Wondering what those options are and how they work? Let&#8217;s look at what goes into the decision. Then you can make an informed choice to cancel, downgrade or product change your credit card.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"jsx-2362441780\">What is downgrading a credit card?<\/h2>\n<p>Downgrading is when you switch your credit card to one that earns the same type of rewards but has a lower (or no) annual fee.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s an example: I previously held the <span data-article-product-link=\"\" class=\"jsx-eb69f9b09a3de1d0 jsx-eea0d1f218f5e80b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/oc\/22035884?name=United\u2120 Explorer Card PID&amp;pid=22035884?tid=post\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"jsx-eb69f9b09a3de1d0 jsx-eea0d1f218f5e80b applyLink inherit\">United\u2120 Explorer Card<\/a><\/span> (see <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/tc\/22035884?pid=22035884&amp;name=United%E2%84%A0%20Explorer%20Card%20PID&amp;data-testid=ratesFees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rates and fees<\/a><\/span>) but wasn&#8217;t flying United much, so the $150 annual fee ($0 introductory annual fee for the first year) wasn&#8217;t worth it to me.<\/p>\n<p>I downgraded this card to the <span data-article-product-link=\"\" class=\"jsx-eb69f9b09a3de1d0 jsx-eea0d1f218f5e80b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/oc\/7557?name=United Gateway\u2120 Card PID&amp;pid=7557?tid=post\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"jsx-eb69f9b09a3de1d0 jsx-eea0d1f218f5e80b applyLink inherit\">United Gateway\u2120 Card<\/a><\/span> (see <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/tc\/7557?pid=7557&amp;name=United%20Gateway%E2%84%A0%20Card%20PID&amp;data-testid=ratesFees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rates and fees<\/a><\/span>), which has no annual fee.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"jsx-3874346954 tpg-figure\">\n<div style=\"padding-top:0\" class=\"jsx-2453190082 full-width-auto-height-image\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"jsx-3874346954 figcaption\">GUIDO MIETH\/GETTY IMAGES<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Both cards earn United Airlines miles, so they&#8217;re in the same family. I downgraded my card, but didn&#8217;t need to open a new card. I also kept my credit history with this card, since it&#8217;s considered the same account on my credit report.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s worth noting that not all cards have downgrade options. For example, you can&#8217;t downgrade the <span data-article-product-link=\"\" class=\"jsx-eb69f9b09a3de1d0 jsx-eea0d1f218f5e80b\"><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/oc\/8249?name=IHG One\u202fRewards Premier Business Credit Card PID&amp;pid=8249?tid=post\" rel=\"noreferrer nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"jsx-eb69f9b09a3de1d0 jsx-eea0d1f218f5e80b applyLink inherit\">IHG One Rewards Premier Business Credit Card<\/a><\/span> (see <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/tc\/8249?pid=8249&amp;name=IHG%20One%E2%80%AFRewards%20Premier%20Business%20Credit%20Card%20PID&amp;data-testid=ratesFees\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rates and fees<\/a><\/span>). It&#8217;s different from downgrading, which means switching to another card within the same family, i.e., earning the same type of rewards.<\/p>\n<p>As with downgrading, your account history is preserved because you aren&#8217;t canceling your credit card. Policies vary by bank, but you should <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/refund-after-card-canceled\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">receive a refund of your annual fee (or at least part of it) if you cancel your card<\/a><\/span> within 30 days after the fee is posted.<\/p>\n<p>However, when deciding whether to cancel your card or keep it open with a downgrade or product change, consider the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>How long have you had this card?<\/strong> We recommend against closing or changing a credit card <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/close-credit-card-one-year\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before you&#8217;ve had it for a year<\/a><\/span>. Additionally, if this is one of your oldest credit cards, preserving your credit history is beneficial.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What options exist for downgrading or changing the product?<\/strong> If you can&#8217;t switch your current credit card to another one, it reduces your options. Know in advance what your options are to make your <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/ultimate-guide-credit-card-retention-offers\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retention phone call<\/a><\/span> simpler.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you change to another card, could that limit your ability to receive a welcome bonus in the future?<\/strong> With American Express in particular, you could be blocked from receiving a welcome bonus if you&#8217;ve had a card in the past \u2014 even if you only had that card after a product change and didn&#8217;t receive a welcome bonus on that card.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Do you need to close a card with this bank?<\/strong> Banks like <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/credit-card-application-restrictions\/#american-express\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American Express<\/a><\/span> and <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/credit-card-application-restrictions\/#capital-one\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Capital One<\/a><\/span> have limits on the number of credit cards you can have with them at any one time. If you&#8217;re at the maximum, you may need to close a card before opening new cards and receiving welcome bonuses on those.<\/li>\n<li><strong>If you close this card, can you replicate its benefits with other cards?<\/strong> You shouldn&#8217;t close or downgrade your only <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/airport-lounge-access\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">credit card that provides airport lounge access<\/a><\/span> unless you&#8217;re willing to forgo this benefit. Be sure you know your card&#8217;s benefits and if you&#8217;ll lose anything important.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What offers would you accept to keep this card for another year?<\/strong> Think through possibilities in advance so you know what <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/credit-cards\/ultimate-guide-credit-card-retention-offers\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">retention offers<\/a><\/span> you would and wouldn&#8217;t accept.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Will you lose your points or miles?<\/strong> If your card earns hotel or airline points, any <span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepointsguy.com\/news\/debunking-credit-card-myths-do-you-keep-your-points-and-miles-when-you-cancel-a-credit-card\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">points already transferred to your loyalty account are safe<\/a><\/span>.
