New York Times<\/a><\/em> this week.<\/p>\n\u201cPeople with an alcohol disorder show a variety of different paths through which they resolve that alcohol use disorder,\u201d said Christopher W. Kahler, director of the Center for Alcohol and Addiction Studies at the Brown University School of Public Health, adding:<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of those involve being completely abstinent, and some of them don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe do recommend that people stop drinking entirely and probably continue to stop drinking once they have an alcohol use disorder,\u201d added Dr. Melissa Weimer, an associate professor who specializes in addiction medicine at the Yale School of Medicine.<\/p>\n
\n\u201cBut everybody\u2019s different, and they have to make their own personal choices.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Alta DeRoo, the chief medical officer of the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, took things a step further, telling the Times<\/em> that she rejects the idea of \u201ca single correct route\u201d to recovery.<\/p>\nDeRoo notes that pushing abstinence as the only path might drive away people who are trying to cut back for purposes of harm reduction.<\/p>\n
Yes, the Alcoholics Anonymous abstinence-only approach dominated the conversation for decades, but experts now believe that there are other paths to recovery.<\/p>\n
None of that changes the fact that this is just one of several current PR headaches for Team Brad.<\/p>\n
