When NBC\u2019s Kate Snow asked Usha last March whether she felt comfortable in MAGA world, Usha tilted her head and answered with a question of her own\u2014\u201cWhat do you mean?\u201d\u2014without disputing the question\u2019s premise. \u201cNo one has ever asked me to engage in any kind of litmus test on anything,\u201d she said. \u201cI don\u2019t feel like I have to walk around pretending anything of any sort. Sometimes I have thoughts that fit very comfortably into one side or another; sometimes I have views that are way more idiosyncratic. It\u2019s a world that I think is actually rather accepting of that, since everyone knows that I really care greatly about JD\u2019s success.\u201d When Snow asked her about MAGA hats, she was similarly unbothered: \u201cI don\u2019t really own any hats. I think I have a Disneyland hat, I want to say. Not a hat lady.\u201d<\/p>\n
Anita McBride, who served as chief of staff to first lady Laura Bush, credits Usha with correctly reading the assignment. \u201cIt\u2019s not easy to be spouse of the VP\u2014that\u2019s not new. Whether you have kids or not, you don\u2019t want to overstep any boundaries with the White House,\u201d McBride says. By building her public role around childhood literacy, Usha, in McBride\u2019s view, has made a wise decision \u201cto advocate for something that any mother cares about.\u201d<\/p>\n
That platform hasn\u2019t shielded her from Washington\u2019s uglier rituals. In February 2025, Trump removed half of The Kennedy Center\u2019s board of trustees, named himself chairman, and replaced those ousted with allies, including Usha. The following month, the Vances were met with about 30 seconds of boos when they took their seats at The Kennedy Center for a National Symphony Orchestra performance. As the onslaught crested, JD waved and smiled; Usha stayed seated beside him, her focus calm and straight ahead. The two remained at the venue for the entire show.<\/p>\n
Elizabeth Haenle, who served as social secretary to Vice President Dick Cheney and managed the vice presidential residence, says that Usha is navigating her position\u2014as the first nonwhite second lady in a movement often associated with nativism\u2014through subtlety rather than silence. \u201cShe\u2019s got a platform whether she likes it or not,\u201d Haenle says, pointing to the Vances\u2019 visit last year to the Taj Mahal in Agra, India, during a four-day tour. \u201cWhen she puts her family in front of the Taj Mahal in traditional clothing, that sends a message.\u201d<\/p>\n
That message has grown more complicated as her husband has started talking more publicly about his own faith journey. While speaking at a Turning Point USA event honoring his late friend Charlie Kirk in October 2025, JD told the crowd that he hoped Usha, who is Hindu, would one day convert to Christianity. He explained that the two of them were \u201cagnostic or atheist\u201d when they met and had decided to raise their children Christian regardless. The remarks drew swift criticism: The Hindu American Foundation cited a history of Christian attempts to convert Hindus and a rise in anti-Hindu rhetoric from Christian sources online, while Ajay Jain Bhutoria, an Indian American adviser to former president Biden, wrote<\/a> that the vice president was publicly \u201ccast[ing] his wife Usha\u2019s Hindu faith as a problem to be fixed.\u201d JD pushed back days later, accusing critics of \u201canti-Christian bigotry\u201d and clarifying that Usha was not a Christian and had no plans to become one. He simply hopes\u2014as in many interfaith marriages\u2014that she might someday see things as he does.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
