Julie Andrews<\/strong><\/a> has explained why she won\u2019t be reprising her role as Queen Clarrisse Renaldi in the forthcoming Princess Diaries 3<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think the story is slightly different, and I\u2019m not quite sure how they\u2019re dealing with that. But it\u2019s too late for me to do it. I think the story has to continue in Princess Mia [played by Anne Hathaway<\/strong><\/a>]. It\u2019s her story. It\u2019s not really mine,\u201d the Sound of Music<\/em> star, 90, told Today.com<\/a><\/em> in an article published on Tuesday, August 11.<\/p>\n

Andrews\u2019 comments come after Hathaway, 43, recently shared an update on the film\u2019s production two years after the instalment was officially greenlit. \u201cI can say I think we had a story breakthrough,\u201d Hathaway said during a July appearance on SiriusXM\u2019s Radio Andy<\/em>. \u201cI think we are moving in the right direction. The script that we were working on \u2014 we kind of had to start over with this new direction, which is not the update I think anybody wants, but we all feel really good that this is going to be the one.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Princess Diaries<\/em>, released in August 2001, followed teenager Mia Thermopolis as she adapted to the life of a princess with help from her estranged grandmother, Queen Clarrisse, after learning of her royal blood. The subsequent Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement<\/em>, released in 2004, saw Mia as a then 21-year-old preparing to take over the throne from her grandmother.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tUPDATE: 10\/4\/24 at 4:50 p.m. ET Hathaway revealed on Friday that she is officially on board to reprise her role as Mia Thermopolis in Princess Diaries 3. \u201cMiracles happen \u2728\ud83d\udc51 Back to Genovia with @adeleblim @disney @somewherepictures,\u201d the actress wrote via Instagram. \u201cThe fairy tale continues \u2764\ufe0f\u200d\ud83d\udd25.\u201d Hathaway also shared a video with Mia saying, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Andrews said in an interview with InStyle<\/em><\/a> magazine, published on Monday, August 10, that she turned down the offer to pick up where the story left off. \u201cI think I probably passed \u2026 I think I\u2019m retired, really, would be about the best description for that,\u201d Andrews told the outlet. \u201c[The crew] asked me all last year if I would be keen to do it. It was very, very hard to say \u2018no\u2019 but I did because I thought I had a wonderful ride, and this one, I felt, would flourish very well and wouldn\u2019t need Granny going in there at my age.\u201d<\/p>\n
