The teen tradwives have wasted no time monetizing. Ava made a video pleading<\/a> for brands to stop offering partnerships, since working is the \u201cleast sexy and feminine thing that I could do.\u201d Last week she called that previous video satire and launched a website offering $50 sourdough starters. Another teen tradwife made her husband the star of an ad for robo-cooker Posha, filming him putting raw ingredients into a small machine. \u201cI don\u2019t cook. I don\u2019t clean. I don\u2019t do the laundry. That\u2019s my wife’s job,\u201d he said cheekily<\/a>. \u201cBut that all changes today.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cEven though a lot of the rhetoric is sort of a rejection of neoliberalism and a rejection of feminism,\u201d Rottenberg says, \u201cwe have to see [tradwives] as products of both of these movements and forces.\u201d<\/p>\n It doesn\u2019t seem to matter, to either brands or viewers, that most of these teenagers don\u2019t have children yet. \u201cI am in training right now,\u201d Samantha Kay, a 19-year-old stay-at-home wife, joked in one video<\/a>. \u201cHow can I be a good stay-at-home mom when I can\u2019t even be a good stay-at-home wife?\u201d<\/p>\n But as quickly as these teens go viral, they feel the consequences. One stopped posting after facing backlash for saying that women should never say no when their husband wants sex; she later commented on Instagram that a man, presumably angry at her posts, had shown up to her house and taken her picture. Even Ava, the most overtly rage-baity of the bunch, took a weeklong break from social media after receiving a swell of hate messages.<\/p>\n It\u2019s understandably difficult to post when there are hundreds of comments warning them that they will regret their life choices. \u201cThe defensiveness, I think, is because women who are the two generations back\u2014former tradwives\u2014are also online,\u201d Sarah Stankorb, author of Disobedient Women,<\/em> says.<\/p>\n
