\u201cPlease accept this formal document as my official written notification to the Women\u2019s National Basketball Association of my voluntary decision to enter the player pool for the 2027 WNBA Draft,\u201d reads a letter Kanter made public today.<\/p>\n
Freedom shared a copy of the letter on social media, adding a simple message alongside it: \u201crules are rules!\u201d<\/p>\n
Yes, he\u2019s certainly committed to the bit.<\/p>\n
In the letter, Freedom cited the league\u2019s collective bargaining agreement, stating that he meets the age requirement and has no remaining collegiate eligibility.<\/p>\n
\nHe also asked the league office to confirm receipt of his paperwork and process his registration for the draft.<\/p>\n
So, yes, this is officially a thing.<\/p>\n
The move comes just days after Freedom and former NBA player Royce White announced their intentions to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft.<\/p>\n
Both men have framed their decisions as a response to the WNBA\u2019s handling of the increasingly heated debate surrounding transgender participation in women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n
The controversy intensified after Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham spoke publicly about her belief that biological differences should be considered when it comes to women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n
\u201cI got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I\u2019m like, \u2018I never once said that,’\u201d Cunningham said last month.<\/p>\n
She added that she wanted to \u201cprotect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn\u2019t have to go against biological men.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nCunningham\u2019s comments sparked considerable backlash, as well as support, and the issue quickly became much bigger than one player\u2019s remarks.<\/p>\n
Minnesota Lynx head coach Cheryl Reeve subsequently wore a \u201cTrans kids belong\u201d shirt during a game against Cunningham\u2019s Indiana Fever.<\/p>\n
The WNBA Players Association has also addressed the controversy, emphasizing its commitment to inclusion while saying it represents players with different backgrounds, experiences and opinions.<\/p>\n
\u201cHate, abuse, and demonization of any person or group of people, including transgender people, only fuel fear, division, and harm,\u201d the WNBPA said in a statement.<\/p>\n
Freedom has now inserted himself directly into that conversation.<\/p>\n
He hasn\u2019t played in the NBA since 2022, but he\u2019s certainly found a new way to remain part of the basketball conversation.<\/p>\n
And now the WNBA has an official piece of paperwork to deal with.<\/p>\n
It remains to be seen whether Freedom\u2019s name will actually appear among the selections at the 2027 WNBA Draft. But he\u2019s certainly found a new way to cling to relevance.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
