But I almost immediately started considering how I could use the promotion, and I ended up earning 24,500 Wyndham points from two stays totaling $180.

Similarly lucrative promotions have led me to fly to six continents on Turkish Airlines to earn one million miles, book a series of one-night Choice Privileges stays to earn points and fly 18 Malaysia Airlines segments in 16 days to secure Oneworld Sapphire status from an international airline.

Whether you’re a frequent or occasional traveler, loyalty program promotions can provide a valuable boost — especially in programs you might otherwise overlook. A compelling offer may make it worthwhile to try a different hotel brand, shift a flight or even plan a new trip. Here’s how I maximized the Wyndham promotion and how I decide which promotions are worth pursuing.

How I used the Wyndham Rewards promotion

The Wyndham Rewards promotion offered 7,500 points for two nights, 12,500 for three nights, or 15,000 for four nights or two separate two-night stays. Plus, as a Wyndham Rewards cardmember, I could earn an additional 7,500 points by using my card to pay for a stay of two nights or longer. Wyndham Rewards Insider members could also earn an additional 7,500 points, but I’m not an Insider member.

I knew I’d be in Asia in June and July, and one of my planned destinations was Phuket, Thailand. Phuket has many excellent hotels, but the Days Inn by Wyndham Patong Beach Phuket offered a convenient location and rates low enough to make it worthwhile to pursue the promotion.

Rooftop pool at the Days Inn by Wyndham Patong Beach Phuket in Thailand. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

I snagged a two-night stay at the Days Inn for $90, which I expected would earn me 16,000 points: 15,000 from the promotion and the 1,000-point minimum for a qualifying stay. Based on TPG’s August 2026 valuations, 16,000 Wyndham points are worth $112.

Unfortunately, my Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card was repeatedly declined at check-in. Even after three calls to Barclays, the card still wouldn’t work, so I eventually paid with another card and missed out on the 7,500-point cardholder bonus. I therefore earned 8,500 Wyndham points on my stay: 7,500 promotional points plus the 1,000-point minimum for a qualifying Wyndham stay.

The information for the Wyndham Rewards Earner Business Card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Since I had some flexibility in my plans, I returned to the Days Inn for two more nights after a few nights at a nearby DoubleTree (where I used my Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card resort credit). Luckily, my card worked this time for the $90 stay, earning me 15,000 more promotional points — 7,500 from another two-night stay and 7,500 from using my Wyndham card to pay — plus the 1,000-point minimum for a qualifying Wyndham stay.

<picture class="EmailSignUp_graphic__pcgxg tw-relative tw-overflow-hidden tw-opacity-0"></picture>

Reward your inbox with the TPG Daily newsletter

Join over 700,000 readers for breaking news, in-depth guides and exclusive deals from TPG’s experts

By signing up, you will receive newsletters and promotional content and agree to our Terms of Use and acknowledge the data practices in our Privacy Policy. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

This second stay brought my Wyndham earnings across both stays to 22,500 promotional points and 2,000 points from the stays themselves. I also earned 720 points from paying with my Wyndham card on the second stay.

In other words, a promotion from a program I use only a few times a year persuaded me to try an inexpensive hotel that fit my plans — and earned enough points for a useful future redemption. Based on TPG’s August 2026 valuations, 24,500 Wyndham points are worth $172. But, once Wyndham changes its award charts on Sept. 15, lowering its entry-level redemptions to just 5,000 points a night, I could redeem these points for a five-night stay (since each night will cost me 4,500 points because I have the old version of the Wyndham Business Earner card that gives me 10% off awards).

How to decide whether a promotion is worth pursuing

A promotion is only valuable if the rewards justify the cost and any changes you make to your plans. Before booking anything, I consider whether the promotion fits travel I already need, what I would spend without it and whether I can realistically use the rewards I’d earn.

Start with existing travel

Whenever I see a new promotion, I consider how it could fit into my upcoming travel plans.

In the best case, the promotion would let me earn more on the travel I’ve already booked or plan to book. For example, I’ve earned 500 points per night while staying at several new Hyatt hotels that I would have booked anyway. And this spring, I earned bonus Marriott points and elite night credits on several stays.

Decide whether changing plans is worthwhile

For most promotions, you’ll have to decide whether the promotion is compelling enough to change where you stay or how you fly.

I opted to stay at the Days Inn and pursue the Wyndham Rewards promotion because the rate was low, the location worked for me, and the promotion offered significant value. But although I have a decent United MileagePlus offer — 3,000 bonus miles when I book and take one trip with a minimum fare of $100 by Oct. 5 — I’m not willing to shift any of my flights to United to earn the bonus miles.

Room at the Days Inn by Wyndham Patong Beach Phuket in Thailand. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

When a promotion would change my plans, I compare the added value of the bonus with any incremental cost or inconvenience (including those that don’t carry a specific monetary value). For example, if a hotel is in a less convenient or appealing location, that may carry a cost. I also account for the rewards and elite benefits I’d forgo by booking outside my usual programs.

In short, earning points or miles worth $100 isn’t compelling if I’d need to spend $150 more than my preferred alternative to earn them.

Read the terms carefully

In some cases, such as the Turkish one-million-mile promotion and the SAS EuroBonus challenge, the promotion may be lucrative enough to plan entirely new trips. However, especially if you’re booking travel primarily to complete a promotion, be especially careful to understand and follow the terms. For example, if I hadn’t double-checked the region list for the Turkish promotion, I likely would have skipped a continent.

For some promotions, it’s also important to analyze the terms and conditions to see if there’s a different way to maximize the promotion. I determined that qualifying for status by segment — using inexpensive four-segment round-trips between Medan, Indonesia and various Malaysian cities — was the best way to maximize Malaysia Airlines’ triple-everything promotion.

Time registration strategically

Registration timing can also matter. While it’s best to enroll in most Hyatt promotions as soon as possible, I noticed a targeted Hyatt offer in my account in May that awards 10,000 bonus points for every 10 qualifying nights (up to 30 nights total) but is valid for only 90 days after registration. I knew I’d stay with Hyatt more frequently in the fall than the summer, so I’m waiting until shortly before the Aug. 19 deadline to register.

Hyatt Place Melbourne / Palm Bay in Florida. KATIE GENTER/THE POINTS GUY

I use a similar strategy for IHG’s two-path bonus points promotions. Since the better earning option depends on how many qualifying nights I’ll complete, I wait until my travel plans are clearer before registering.

Make sure you can use the rewards

Finally, especially if I’m earning points or miles in a program I rarely use, I’ll consider whether I’ll actually use the rewards. Specifically, I’ll consider how I could redeem the rewards, when they will expire and whether there’s a good way to top off my account (such as a transferable rewards currency that partners with the program).

I generally avoid pursuing a promotion that would leave me with an awkward balance and no realistic path toward a worthwhile redemption.

Bottom line

Promotions can make it worthwhile to look beyond the loyalty programs you typically use. In this case, a Wyndham Rewards offer persuaded me to book four inexpensive nights that fit my existing plans and let me earn enough points for a useful future redemption.

But even seemingly lucrative promotions aren’t automatically worth pursuing. Before changing your plans, consider the full cost and inconvenience, read the terms carefully and make sure you’ll actually use the rewards. The best promotions aren’t necessarily the ones offering the biggest bonuses. Instead, they’re the ones that complement your travel plans and provide more value than they cost.

Source link

When I wrote a news post about a Wyndham Rewards promotion for earning up to 30,000 bonus points after just four nights, I expected most readers might not see the value.
