Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/strong><\/a> is revealing a new chapter in her private life as she continues to represent New York City\u2019s 14th congressional district.<\/p>\n

\u201cHey everyone, it\u2019s been a minute since I\u2019ve posted to stories, but I think it\u2019s a good time to kind of dive back in again \u2014 it\u2019s August recess and I think it\u2019s good for you all to hear a little bit more from me directly,\u201d the congresswoman, 36, said via her Instagram Stories on Saturday, August, 8, adding that she is \u201chaving some things happen\u201d in her life that she wants to \u201cshare more\u201d with her followers amid her \u201creflective mood.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to share with you all a decision that is very personal that I have made that has taken me time to consider, weigh and save up for,\u201d she continued, \u201cAnd it is of a sensitive matter and a personal matter and usually I keep my private life quite private, but I have made the decision to start freezing my eggs.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez, who was 29 when she was sworn into Congress after becoming the youngest woman elected to the House of Representatives<\/a> in 2018, is currently engaged to her longtime partner Riley Roberts<\/strong>. The congresswoman admitted that her decision to freeze her eggs \u2014 one she plans to document for her social media followers \u2014 was due, in part, to near-constant speculation she will one-day be a frontrunner for the Democratic nominee for president<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe media will run up and ask a question like, \u2018Are you going to run for this? or, \u2018Are you going to run for that?\u2019 And it\u2019s almost through this very two-dimensional craven understanding or ambitious understanding of power,\u201d she explained. \u201cWhen I think a lot of us actually approach these considerations or these decisions through the larger context of our lives as whole human beings and what is happening in our lives as whole human beings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ocasio-Cortez \u2014 a common target<\/a> of President Donald Trump<\/strong><\/a> and members of the Republican party<\/a> \u2014 also acknowledged that \u201cstrangely\u201d there is a \u201cpolitical risk\u201d or potential \u201cpolitical tax\u201d to her candidly sharing her egg-freezing journey<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t go down those rabbit holes and fixate on them for men in terms of their decision the way they do for women,\u201d she added. \u201cAnd I\u2019m not here to, like, talk about what\u2019s fair or unfair in this context \u2014 this is just the world that we live in today, and so I\u2019m aware that just by me choosing to not keep this private there may be a consequence.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cBut you know what, I\u2019m OK with that. This is a choice that I am making to feel more in control of my life and if people want to make assumptions about my decision, let them make those assumptions \u2013 I feel empowered to make this choice. I think it\u2019s a very privileged position that I\u2019ve been able to be able to make. And it\u2019s also a result of, I think, changes in technology that have also made it more financially accessible.\u201d<\/p>\n
