Tragic news out of the daytime television world:<\/p>\n
Jeffrey Carlson, an actor who portrayed the first-ever transgender character on the long-running soap opera All My Children, has passed away unexpectantly.<\/p>\n
He was 48 years old.<\/p>\n<\/noscript>Jeffrey Carlson is dead at the age of 48. We send our condolences to the star\u2019s loved ones. (CBS)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nThe star\u2019s death was first announced publicly by Time Out New York theater editor Adam Feldman. <\/p>\n
\u201cRIP Jeffrey Carlson, 48, exposed-nerve star of Broadway (Billy in The Goat, Marilyn in Taboo) and TV (the groundbreaking trans character Zoe on All My Children),\u201d he tweeted on July 8. <\/p>\n
\u201cA powerful actor and a painful loss.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carlson \u2014 a graduate of University of California Davis who also studied at New York City\u2019s Juilliard School \u2014 made his Broadway debut in the 2002 play The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?<\/p>\n (Twitter)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nCarlson debuted on All My Children in August 2006 as a British rock star named Zarf, before returning to the show with the name Zoe.<\/p>\n
Wrote actress Susan Hart shared on Facebook in the wake of this horrible development:<\/p>\n
\u201cFor those of you that don\u2019t know, I\u2019m very sorry to share the news that Jeffrey passed away yesterday.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have been respectful of his family\u2019s privacy in not sharing the news sooner\u2026 also could not breathe or function\u2026 still can\u2019t\u2026 love to all\u2026 just devastated.\u201d<\/p>\n (ABC)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\u201cThey hired me as a day player but then they wrote me on the show. My parents were thrilled,\u201d Carlton told Chicago-based LGBTQ+ newspaper Windy City Times in 2013 of his role on All My Children. <\/p>\n
\u201cI had a meeting with the producer and they explained that they wanted to do the first coming out story of a transgender from male to female on daytime television. <\/p>\n
\u201cI asked, \u2018How are you going to do it?\u2019 She said, \u2018With dignity.’\u201d<\/p>\n (Facebook)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\nEden Riegel, who played Zoe\u2019s friend Bianca on All My Children, paid tribute to her late costar on Twitter following news of his death.<\/p>\n
\u201cDevastated beyond measure to hear of the passing of the beautiful and gifted Jeffrey Carlson,\u201d the actress wrote. <\/p>\n
\u201cI feel fortunate to have called this kind soul a friend and see his brilliant work up close. Gone far too soon \u2014 an unimaginable loss. Love you, Jeffrey. Rest friend.\u201d<\/p>\n
No cause of death has been announced at this time.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was very moved by it,\u201d Carlson told the Los Angeles Times of the story line in 2006. \u201cIf it creates a conversation, I think we\u2019ve done our job.\u201d<\/p>\n
The arc earned All My Children a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Daily Drama in 2007\u2026 while Carlson wrapped up his run on the ABC soap opera later that year before returning to theater work.<\/p>\n
