Rising star Igby Rigney<\/strong><\/a> stars in the new series The Shards<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, portraying a fictionalized version<\/a> of author Bret Easton Ellis<\/strong><\/a>. <\/p>\n

Ellis<\/strong> wrote the autofiction novel The Shards<\/em>, which Ryan Murphy<\/strong><\/a> just turned into an FX on Hulu series. While he was involved with the show, Ellis<\/strong> was not available to help the actor get into character. <\/p>\n

Igby<\/strong> told Variety<\/a><\/em> that Bret<\/strong> has “been involved with the crafting of the character, but he\u2019s been working with Ryan primarily. I\u2019ve never gotten to meet him.”<\/p>\n

When asked if it would have been helpful to meet Bret<\/strong>, he added, “I don\u2019t know, just because I haven\u2019t had that interaction.”<\/p>\n

“Just being able to focus on the scripts and lean on Ryan<\/strong> and what he was hoping to bring to life has maybe led to more clarity and was less overwhelming for me. I didn\u2019t have access to Bret<\/strong> and I don\u2019t have access to whatever information I could have potentially learned from that, so I could just let that piece go and really focus on what Ryan was giving us on the day,” Igby<\/strong> said. <\/p>\n

Igby<\/strong> noted how an interesting part of this project is that he’s playing both a real person and a fictional character, noting how in the book, Bret<\/strong> tells the story with the phrase “I remember.”<\/p>\n

“It\u2019s almost like a motif in the text. I remember <\/em>this, and I remember<\/em> that. It\u2019s all in retrospect, which is interesting to play. There\u2019s a potential unreliable narrator element to it. Naturally, he is remembering a time that was very long ago, and we\u2019re bringing that time period to life in the present,” Igby<\/strong> said. <\/p>\n
