He was best known for his groundbreaking role as the daytime TV\u2019s first transgender character on <em>All My Children<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Time Out New York<\/em> theater critic <strong>Adam Feldman<\/strong> was first to share the news on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FeldmanAdam\/status\/1677862081545003009\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> on Sunday, July 9. A cause of death was not reported.<\/p>\n<p><em>All My Children<\/em> alum <strong>Eden Riegel<\/strong> was among the first to pay tribute to Carlson after his death. \u201cDevastated beyond measure to hear of the passing of the beautiful and gifted Jeffrey Carlson,\u201d Riegel wrote via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/edenriegel\/status\/1678124531175792640\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Twitter<\/a> on Sunday. \u201cI feel fortunate to have called this kind soul a friend and see his brilliant work up close. Gone far too soon \u2014 an unimaginable loss. Love you, Jeffrey. Rest friend.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A Long Beach, California, native, Carlson studied acting at The University of California Davis, graduating in 1997, training in New York City at The Juilliard School. He appeared in several Broadway shows \u2014 including <em>Tartuffe<\/em> and <em>Taboo<\/em> \u2014 before making the jump to the screen. He had a guest spot on<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/shows\/law-and-order-svu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em> Law and Order: Special Victims Unit<\/em><\/a> as well as a small role in the 2005 romantic comedy <em>Hitch<\/em> before he scored his role on<em> All My Children<\/em>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3334269\" style=\"width: 900px;\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<div class=\"ratio-based-placeholder\" style=\"padding-bottom:66.714285714286%;\"><\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\"><span class=\"caption\"><br \/>\n Eden Riegel and Jeffrey Carlson on \u2018All My Children.\u2019<\/span> <span class=\"credit\">Heidi Gutman\/Abc Tv\/Kobal\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Carlson initially had a one-day job on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/pictures\/soap-stars-who-dated-offscreen-kelly-ripa-mark-consuelos-more\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the soap opera<\/a> as flamboyant British rockstar Zarf. Producers decided the theater veteran was perfect to take on the upcoming story arc for a trans character. Zarf returned to Pine Valley and developed feelings for Bianca (Riegel) and revealed that she actually identified as a woman. Zarf went on to change her name to Zoe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was very moved by it,\u201d Carlson told the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-2006-dec-24-ca-trans24-story.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Los Angeles Times<\/em><\/a> of the story line in 2006. \u201cIf it creates a conversation, I think we\u2019ve done our job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The story earned <em>All My Children<\/em> a GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Daily Drama in 2007.
