The 26-year-old Daughter From Hell<\/em> singer-songwriter got candid in an interview with Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n

During the conversation, Gracie<\/strong> provided candid thoughts about her romance with Paul<\/strong>, how it has affected her songwriting, their music together, fame, mental health, and where she’s at in this current chapter of her life.<\/p>\n

On the response to headlines about Paul Mescal affecting her career:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018Are we on crack? Like, what the f–k?\u2019 That was my cue to be like, \u2018Oh, remember why you don\u2019t look [at social media]?\u2019… Run with it, circus.\u201d<\/p>\n

On how her relationship with Paul Mescal has actually changed her songwriting:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s had the most amazing effect on my writing. It has given me the most amount of space to reflect on everything in my life. It has held a mirror to me in ways that I didn\u2019t know a relationship with another person of any kind could. It has given me all the perspective that I could have ever hoped for, on previous relationships, on my relationship with my family, on my friendships. It is the greatest gift, period.\u201d<\/p>\n

On growing up with her famous parents, J.J. Abrams and Katie McGrath:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“If you\u2019re asking about the public-eye piece, it was very contained. Like, it was fun the handful of times that we visited my dad on set. But regardless of what your parents do, growing up, nothing is less cool than your parents \u2014 so it\u2019s pure rejection of the thing…I [grew] up with families whose parents also worked in the entertainment business, who were heat-seeking missiles with their children in a way that could not have been further from the truth for us.\u201d<\/p>\n

On suffering the worst panic attack of her life in a hotel room in NYC just before promo began for her album:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I was just not taking it one day at a time, and just overwhelmed looking at scheduling stuff…you know how excitement and anxiety live in the same part of your brain? I think the anticipatory excitement and anxiety can sometimes get confused for me. That\u2019s always been true for me across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

On fame taking a toll on her mental health:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m comfortable with the reality that people will interpret my music from their own personal point of view, and I understand the position from which I\u2019m writing…sometimes the way that things present are not how they feel inside. In some core ways, there are aspects to this whole thing that feel at odds with my nervous system, personally \u2014 and there\u2019s total confusion and guilt and shame associated with that feeling, for sure. You can become untethered from yourself quite quickly if you\u2019re not careful.\u201d<\/p>\n

On co-writing “Imaginary Friend” with Paul:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt wasn\u2019t some extraordinary event. We\u2019re a very musical household, and so there\u2019s always something brewing. I started playing this guitar part \u2014 but we do that all the time. I feel lucky to be generally inspired by him as a person and by his brain. It\u2019s the easiest thing to make stuff together.\u201d<\/p>\n

On Paul preparing for the role of Paul McCartney in the Beatles biopics, and teaching himself bass left-handed:<\/strong> <\/p>\n

\u201cSo amazing to witness. He\u2019s like an alien. I mean, he\u2019s better at guitar backwards than I have been at guitar my whole life.\u201d<\/p>\n

On writing “Hit the Wall”:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cActually, I cried that day in the studio, writing it. And I sobbed writing \u2018Daughter From Hell.\u2019 Like, \u2018How am I going to cut this f–king vocal?\u2019”<\/p>\n

On filming her first movie<\/strong> Please<\/em> with Halina Reijn:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s such a humbling experience, and it scares the f–k out of me, which is how I know I\u2019m in the right place, I think.\u201d<\/p>\n

On appreciating this chapter of her life:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cHonestly, the truth for me right now is that what I\u2019m appreciating the most about this time in my life is that in-between quality. I don\u2019t think any of us have any real idea at this point how it\u2019s all going to pan out, but I feel grateful for what this decade thus far has allowed me to reflect on with more softness and grace.\u201d<\/p>\n
