When you arrive at the end of a long workweek and feel the need to get out and explore nature, a national park<\/a><\/span> getaway is just what the doctor ordered.<\/p>\n

But if you only have one weekend, you might think national parks are too large or too remote to explore in a couple of days. Don’t worry \u2014 here, we’ve rounded up nine parks that are both manageable enough and accessible enough to visit in just a single weekend.<\/p>\n

Best for otherworldly landscapes within reach: Saguaro National Park in Arizona<\/h2>\n

Surrounded by Saguaro National Park’s namesake cacti \u2014 which grow up to 50 feet tall and can live for centuries \u2014 you’ll feel like you’re on another planet, even though you’re just outside the city.<\/p>\n

But there is another side to Saguaro National Park \u2014 literally. The park has two districts<\/a><\/span> that sandwich the city of Tucson. Tucson Mountain District on the west side has the rolling desert hills and dense cactus forests the park is known for, while Rincon Mountain District to the east offers more rugged mountain terrain and extensive hiking trails.<\/p>\n

Each district is less than an hour away from the city center, so you can cover both in a weekend. You could explore one district per day while basing yourself in Tucson \u2014 say, at a points property like Graduate by Hilton<\/a><\/span> Tucson, Hyatt Place Tucson Central or IHG’s Voco the Tuxon.<\/p>\n

Tucson International Airport (TUS) is served by several major carriers, including the Big Three as well as Southwest, Alaska and Frontier<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Best for a weekend road trip: Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Tennessee and North Carolina<\/h2>\n

Straddling the border between two states, Great Smoky Mountains National Park is ideal for a short road trip.<\/p>\n

You can fly into North Carolina’s Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), about an hour east of the park border, then make your way west to Newfound Gap Road (US Highway 441). This scenic route will take you through the park’s famously lush hills, multiple types of forest (perfect for leaf peeping<\/a><\/span> in the fall) and spectacular mountain vistas.<\/p>\n

Consider spending the night at one of the park’s campgrounds or the only in-park hotel, LeConte Lodge<\/a><\/span>. Or book a points hotel in Gatlinburg, Tennessee, just beyond the park’s western edge, and you’ll be perfectly positioned for day hikes.<\/p>\n

Then depart from Gatlinburg Pigeon Forge Airport (GKT), about half an hour away, or Knoxville’s McGhee Tyson Airport (TYS), an hour and fifteen minutes away.<\/p>\n

Best for a coolcation: Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky<\/h2>\n

Beat the heat this summer with a trip to Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave, the world’s longest known cave system and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Not only is it nice and cool in the caverns, but you won’t have to worry about slathering on sunscreen all day. Plus, you’ll see underground wonders and wildlife that you won’t find in most national parks.<\/p>\n

But there’s more to this park than what’s below the surface. You can also soak in the beauty of the surrounding forest by hiking the park’s network of trails, kayaking the Green and Nolin Rivers, or staying at an in-park campsite or cabin<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

You can enter Mammoth Cave National Park and enjoy its surface pursuits free of charge, but to see the caves, you’ll need to buy tickets to a guided tour. These tours can book up weeks in advance, so check out your options<\/a><\/span> and plan your schedule ahead of time.<\/p>\n

The visitor center is about an hour and a half from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), which is easy to reach thanks to expanded service from Delta<\/a><\/span>, Breeze<\/a><\/span> and Allegiant<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Best for tackling two parks in one weekend: Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Park in California<\/h2>\n

To see giant trees in a small window of time, head to these next-door-neighbor national parks in central California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains. They’re home to the world’s largest trees \u2014 some over 3,000 years old \u2014 as well as other wildlife like marmots, black bears and bighorn sheep.<\/p>\n

You can learn about the trees’ fascinating history at the Giant Forest Museum, and there’s even a fallen tree you can drive through known as Tunnel Log<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

You can reach either Sequoia’s Ash Mountain Entrance or Kings Canyon’s Big Stump Entrance from Fresno Yosemite International Airport (FAT) in under an hour and a half. It takes about as long to drive from one park to the other along Generals Highway, though you should allow extra time for photo ops at scenic overlooks.<\/p>\n

Best if you don’t want to rent a car: Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado<\/h2>\n

Most national parks are best accessed with a vehicle, but Colorado’s Rocky Mountain National Park is doable without one.<\/p>\n

Services like Estes Park Shuttle<\/a><\/span> take you straight from Denver International Airport (DEN) to the park’s gateway town of Estes Park and drop you off right at your hotel. Tickets cost $85 one-way or $155 round-trip per person.<\/p>\n

You can then take one of three shuttle routes<\/a><\/span> from Estes Park to different areas of the park, but keep in mind that some require advance reservations. There are also plenty of Estes Park-based tours<\/a><\/span>, from hiking and wildlife spotting to photography and horseback riding.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, if you rent a car, the spectacular 48-mile Trail Ridge Road makes it easy to see the park’s best views in a single scenic drive. Then you can come back the next day to explore the park’s trails on foot.<\/p>\n

Estes Park doesn’t have many points hotels, so this could be a great time to use any hotel credits<\/a><\/span> or travel credits<\/a><\/span> you may have.<\/p>\n

Best to beat the crowds: North Cascades National Park in Washington<\/h2>\n

Though North Cascades is only about three hours from Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA), it gets far fewer visitors than the state’s other parks. According to the National Park Service’s database<\/a><\/span>, this hidden gem welcomed just shy of 47,000 visitors in 2025, compared to 1.6 million for neighboring Mount Rainier National Park and a whopping 3.5 million for Olympic National Park.<\/p>\n

With so little traffic, you can fully appreciate the park’s gorgeous mountain vistas, pristine alpine lakes, and quiet temperate forests. Plus, fewer visitors means a better chance of spotting wildlife like mountain goats, wolverines and pikas. With hundreds of glaciers and snow-capped peaks known as the American Alps, North Cascades is also prime territory for a summer coolcation.<\/p>\n

If you don’t manage to snag a room in one of the park’s few lodges \u2014 which often book out up to a year in advance \u2014 there are plenty of options in the Western gateway town of Marblemount, a two-and-a-half-hour drive from SEA.<\/p>\n

Best for an urban-meets-outdoors trip: Hot Springs National Park in Arkansas<\/h2>\n

The country’s second-smallest national park is nestled in the town of Hot Springs, Arkansas, in the Ouachita Mountains, less than an hour away from Bill and Hillary Clinton National Airport (LIT) in Little Rock. Visitors will find plenty of natural wonders along the park’s network of hiking trails and Hot Springs Mountain Scenic Drive, all within easy reach of the town’s boutiques, diners and more.<\/p>\n

The park is full of history, ranging from nearly 100 Indigenous archaeological sites to the Gangster Museum of America, which illuminates the town’s role as a mafia hub in the 1930s. Plus, there are two bathhouses where you can relax in the healing waters: Buckstaff<\/a><\/span> and Quapaw Baths & Spa<\/a><\/span>, both on historic Bathhouse Row.<\/p>\n

Focus on the town’s outdoor side by camping at Gulpha Gorge Campground, or stay at one of the town’s hotels \u2014 including a DoubleTree by Hilton<\/a><\/span> \u2014 for more comfort with easy access to nature.<\/p>\n

Best for train enthusiasts: Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio<\/h2>\n

At only 32,000 acres and a half-hour drive from of Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (CLE), Ohio’s only national park is a great candidate for a weekend getaway. You can easily access Cuyahoga Valley National Park by car, but it also offers something you won’t find at most parks: a scenic train.<\/p>\n

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad<\/a><\/span> offers a half-day ride through the park’s forests and meadows. There’s also a seasonal hop-on-hop-off train<\/a><\/span> that lets you hike or bike the Towpath Trail or paddle the river in one direction and catch the train back from various stops.<\/p>\n

If you want to avoid driving altogether, you can catch a rideshare to Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad’s Rockside Depot, about 20 minutes from the airport.<\/p>\n

To make it even easier, three major carriers have recently launched new flights to CLE: United<\/a><\/span>, American<\/a><\/span> and JetBlue<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

Best for watery wonders: Everglades and Biscayne National Parks in Florida<\/h2>\n

If you’re torn between the beach<\/a><\/span> and the great outdoors for your weekend getaway, I have good news: You don’t have to choose.<\/p>\n

Located off the southeastern coast of Florida, Biscayne National Park encompasses coral reefs, mangrove forests, historic shipwrecks and more. Since 95% of the park is underwater, the best way to experience it is on guided excursions like boat tours and snorkeling trips. The Biscayne National Park Institute<\/a><\/span> offers a variety of activities that take off from Miami, so you could base yourself here and explore the park one day, then relax on the beach the next.<\/p>\n

Or, you could double up by hitting Everglades National Park on the other side of Miami. These sprawling wetlands offer even more eco-adventures, like airboat tours to hunt for alligators, otters and manatees.<\/p>\n

Bottom line<\/h2>\n

While it would take weeks or even months to cover every inch of most national parks, the parks on this list are manageable enough to see their highlights in just a couple of days. Plus, they are close enough to the nearest airport to make a weekend getaway worthwhile (without spending all your time in the car).<\/p>\n
