Page Six<\/a><\/em> on Monday, July 27, the music legend disclosed her diagnosis.<\/p>\n\u201cSo many people have written to me, kindly wondering about my relative silence, asking how I am and what I have been doing,\u201d Simon began.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe truth is,\u201d she revealed, \u201cI\u2019ve been learning how to live with Parkinson\u2019s disease.\u201d<\/p>\n
Parkinson\u2019s is a neurodegenerative disease that impacts both motor and non-motor functions. It is most recognized by physical tremors.<\/p>\n
Simon explained that it has \u201ctaken me some time to understand the diagnosis, to adjust to it, and to decide how much I wanted to say about it publicly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
<\/svg><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n\u201cParkinson\u2019s is different for everyone, and it can be unpredictable,\u201d Simon explained.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome days I\u2019m so tired I can\u2019t get the day moving at all,\u201d she acknowledged. \u201cOn others, it gives me a little more room to move, think, work, and feel like myself.\u201d<\/p>\n
Simon underwent three joint replacement surgeries after arthritis attacked her knees and one hip. During her recovery, new mobility issues presented themselves.<\/p>\n
\u201cI had trouble standing up from low chairs and deep couches without someone offering me an arm,\u201d Simon recalled.<\/p>\n
She shared that it reached a point where she could no longer walk without \u201cconsiderable help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
<\/svg><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n\u2018I do not consider Parkinson\u2019s a gift or a blessing\u2019<\/h2>\n \u201cThere is no tidy or predictable schedule to the illness. It does not consult my calendar before deciding what kind of day I am going to have,\u201d Simon explained bluntly.<\/p>\n
Additionally, she shared, she had a basal cell carcinoma \u2014 a form of cancer. Though she treated it with surgery, she has felt self-conscious about her appearance as a result.<\/p>\n
\u201cBetween my mobility issues, the Parkinson\u2019s diagnosis, the surgery, and the emotional effects of it all, withdrawing from public view was the most palatable reaction,\u201d Simon reasoned.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do not consider Parkinson\u2019s a gift or a blessing. It is neither. It is difficult, frustrating, and sometimes frightening,\u201d she described.<\/p>\n
Simon affirmed: \u201cI am still learning how to live with it and how to accept it without feeling that I have surrendered something essential.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
<\/svg><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\nWe mentioned that there was good news, and there is!<\/p>\n
Simon\u2019s new album, Comes in Waves, releases on August 14.<\/p>\n
\u201cWorking on the music gave shape to days that did not always have much shape,\u201d Simon expressed. \u201cIt gave me somewhere to go without having to leave the room.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cIt reminded me that illness can change your life without becoming the whole of your life.\u201d<\/p>\n
Simon concluded her statement: \u201cI have learned to accept that every day will look a little different. But I am still very much here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
