For years, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) has held the title of the world’s busiest airport<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

A big reason for its dominance: the massive Delta Air Lines operates from there.<\/p>\n

It’s why frequent Delta flyers know all too well, a Delta flight often involves a connection in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

But each of the nation’s “Big Three” legacy airlines have a hub-and-spoke setup that filters millions of flyers through a handful of really big airports.<\/p>\n

Flying American Airlines? You’ll often find yourself in Dallas or Charlotte. If you’re a regular United Airlines customer, there’s a good chance you’re a regular at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD).<\/p>\n

Here’s how the biggest airline hubs in the U.S. stacked up in 2025 when it came to the total number of departing flights last year, per data from aviation analytics firm Cirium.<\/p>\n

Not surprisingly, Delta’s presence in Atlanta held the top spot.<\/p>\n

One thing that’s obvious, looking at this list, is that airports in some of the nation’s busiest cities don’t appear. For instance, there’s no sign of New York City’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) or Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), which routinely rank among the world’s busiest airports.<\/p>\n

That’s due, in part, to the scarcity of gate space and takeoff and landing rights created by the many domestic and international carriers that fly to those hubs; no one airline is dominant. (At some big-city airports, flight schedules are tightly regulated by the federal government<\/a><\/span>.)<\/p>\n

So, for instance, even though Delta is a major player at JFK, the total flights it offers there pale in comparison to what it flies in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

O’Hare appears twice<\/h3>\n

One airport, meanwhile, makes the list twice: O’Hare in Chicago. Hometown carrier United has long been the market leader there, but American added flights at a fast pace over the past year, fueling a turf war<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n

The list looks a little different if you look at how many total seats<\/em> airlines offered at their hubs in 2025.<\/p>\n

The airlines and airports that rank higher on this list are hubs where a carrier prioritizes larger planes \u2014 rather than using a ton of regional jets.<\/p>\n
