Chris Evans<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out about his big return to the MCU in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday<\/strong><\/a><\/em>. <\/p>\n

The 45-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the next Avengers<\/em> installment, marking his first time as the character since Avengers: Endgame<\/em> in 2019.<\/p>\n

He briefly returned to the MCU in 2024, reprising his Fantastic Four<\/em> role of Johnny Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine<\/em>. <\/p>\n

While attending the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con<\/strong><\/a><\/em> on Saturday (July 25), Chris<\/strong> opened up about returning to the role and why this was the right project after receiving “at least a dozen pitches” over the years.<\/p>\n

Marvel bosses have pitched different ideas to Chris Evans over 8 years<\/h3>\n

“When we finished\u00a0Endgame<\/em>\u00a0in 2018, Lou [D\u2019Esposito]<\/strong> and Kevin [Feige]<\/strong> took me to dinner and they were like, \u2018We\u2019d love to keep doing movies with Steve Rogers as Nomad,\u2019\u201d Chris<\/strong> told Entertianment Weekly<\/a><\/em>, referring to one of Steve’s alternate identities after hanging up the Captain America mantle. \u201cAnd I said, \u2018Okay, well, what do you got?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey showed me a pitch, and it was a great pitch, but for whatever reason, it just didn\u2019t feel right at the time,\u201d he added. \u201cI kind of wanted to\u2026 I was a little precious. I wanted to preserve it. But I just said, \u2018Please keep pitching.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the course of eight years, I probably heard at least a dozen pitches,\u201d Chris<\/strong> continued. \u201cAnd they were all wonderful. It just never quite felt right. And you do start thinking maybe that\u2019s the expiration \u2014 whatever it is \u2014 maybe it\u2019s not right because it\u2019s just not right.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI got a phone call from my team saying there\u2019s a rumor [Robert Downey Jr.<\/strong> is] talking to Marvel, and I was like, \u2018Uh, oh. What does this mean?\u2019\u201d he recalled to EW<\/em>. \u201cAnd all of a sudden it felt right. [Doomsday<\/em>\u00a0co-director Joe Russo<\/strong>] gave me the pitch, and Downey<\/strong> was baying. It just all of a sudden\u2026 it was like, \u2018This is it.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

What’s next for Chris Evans in the MCU<\/h3>\n

\u201cI guess it\u2019s a never-say-never, but certainly not willing to just jump back in for anything because I think everyone here is precious with their role in the universe,\u201d the actor said. “This stuff, it\u2019s earned its position over a long period of time. You don\u2019t want to mess with that.\u201d<\/p>\n
