Ransom Canyon<\/em> took a risk with the show\u2019s sibling love triangle \u2014 and now several cast members are breaking their silence on the shocking shakeup.<\/p>\n

During season 2 of the hit Netflix series,<\/a> which is streaming now, Lauren (Lizzy Greene<\/strong>) and Kit (Casey W. Johnson<\/strong>) got together while she was still dating his younger brother, Lucas (Garrett Wareing<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

Wareing, 24, Johnson, 31, and creator April Blair<\/strong> spoke exclusively to Us<\/em> about the decision to explore such a taboo topic \u2014 and whether they were worried about the fan reaction<\/a> to the onscreen shakeup.<\/p>\n

\u201cSeason 2 of the writers\u2019 room began months before season 1 aired. So we definitely care what the fans think and are listening but by the time the season aired, we were well on our way with writing season 2,\u201d Blair recalled. \u201cI saw the first cut of the tornado episode and I was like, \u2018We need to do something with Kit and Lauren. I think there\u2019s a lot of chemistry there.’\u201d<\/p>\n

Blair recalled the writers\u2019 room being \u201cdivided\u201d on the subject.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI was like, \u2018Messy is great. Let\u2019s just try it.\u2019 But I definitely think once the show aired and we saw all the people shipping them I was like, \u2018We\u2019re on the right track,’\u201d she continued. \u201cBut we definitely take it into account.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite filming scenes between Kit and Lauren in season 1, Johnson didn\u2019t realize the show could explore them<\/a> as a couple.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember specifically going into the tornado episode and being like, \u2018I don\u2019t want it to feel intimate. This is my younger brother\u2019s girlfriend so I don\u2019t want it to be a thing,’\u201d he told Us. \u201cThen doing the scenes and obviously how it came out and how everyone reacted to it \u2026 it was just two people having a genuine vulnerability with each other and that grew and that was more than just that was what connected them. I didn\u2019t expect it but it ended up happening.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wareing was just excited to go along for the ride.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe writers listen y\u2019all! And if it\u2019s drama that you want then it\u2019s drama you are going to get! Careful what you wish for,\u201d he quipped. \u201cSecretly, I love [the love triangle]. It\u2019s dangerous and makes for a very engaging watch.\u201d<\/p>\n

Why Did Kit and Lauren Kiss Despite Her Relationship With Lucas?<\/h2>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s very confusing. They\u2019re both very confused at this point. Kit is at a crossroads in his life and he doesn\u2019t know what he wants to do,\u201d Johnson noted to Us<\/em>. \u201cBut I think there\u2019s just an undeniable connection between Kit and Lauren. He feels like he has to explore even if it\u2019s not the best thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson pointed out how the duo<\/a> connect over being \u201coutcasts\u201d in town.<\/p>\n

\u201cLucas is so perfect. For Lauren, it\u2019s hard to match up to that. If you mess up, you feel like I\u2019m not good enough for this person. Kit, in the same way, feels like Lucas is this perfect golden figure, which he\u2019s not,\u201d he continued. \u201cBut in their eyes, that\u2019s how they see him and they want to protect that and they find themselves making mistakes. They just are in the same place. Maybe that translates to longterm and maybe it doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blair pointed out that Lauren was struggling compared to Lucas, saying, \u201cThey\u2019re just not in the same place emotionally. They need other loves and other lives and other connections. That\u2019s what we\u2019re doing moving forward \u2014 but always with this idea that they\u2019re the Quinn and Staten of their era.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson, Wareing and Blair were all in agreement that when it came to the bigger picture: Lucas and Lauren got their vote.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a viewer, I think Kit might say differently. But you never know what\u2019s going to happen. In my mind, they\u2019re endgame,\u201d Johnson shared. \u201cThose two have to end up together at the end but we\u2019ll see. You never know.\u201d<\/p>\n

Blair, meanwhile, told Us<\/em> Lucas and Lauren \u201care very endgame\u201d for her.<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know when that endgame is and if it even exists in the life of our series. But they\u2019re the Quinn and Staten except back in high school,\u201d the screenwriter teased. \u201cWhen Lucas is saying goodbye to her and tells her about Kit and he says, \u2018One day we\u2019ll be OK.\u2019 I think they just need to have other lives and other loves and other experiences.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then there is Wareing, who argued it has to be Lucas and Lauren \u2014 or nothing.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf Lucas and Lauren aren\u2019t endgame I\u2019m never believing in love again,\u201d he joked to Us. \u201cThey resemble, to me, the idealistic kind of youthful love and longing. I\u2019d love to see that fantasy for them fully realized.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe sibling love triangle trope was right there. How could they not swing for it! I just hope people know which brother they should be rooting for!\u201d he quipped to Us<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Will Lucas and Kit Reconcile?<\/h2>\n

Johnson has no doubt in his mind that the brothers will make up, telling Us, \u201cMaybe he\u2019ll get to punch me a couple more times before he fully forgives me. But that\u2019s a tough one to come back from. They\u2019ve been rocking with each other forever though.\u201d<\/p>\n

Wareing offered his own perspective on Lucas\u2019 decision to support Lauren and Kit.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause at the end of the day, she is still the love of his life. And \u2018When you love something\u2026 you have to let it go.\u2019 So Lucas does,\u201d he added. \u201cBecause he loves her so much and just wants to see her happy. Whether that is with him, or without.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cOur sweet boy Lucas kept getting blow after blow! He can\u2019t catch a break this season,\u201d he noted to Us. \u201cBut if we are talking about character arcs, there has to be an ebb and a flow \u2014 an up and a down \u2014 and to play that downward spiral as an actor was quite exciting for me and something that April, our writers, and I really worked on together. Lucas is, and will continue to be, the underdog.\u201d<\/p>\n
