After social media users questioned why the comedian, 63, had abandoned his trademark voluminous red hair, the television host and podcaster said the unexpected look came after following advice to rub oil into his scalp following an appearance at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago.<\/p>\n
Conan explained the story during an episode of his Conan O\u2019Brien Needs a Friend podcast, with the former Late Night with Conan O\u2019Brien, The Tonight Show and Conan host saying he developed a severe scalp sunburn last month. <\/p>\n
Conan said his skull felt like it was \u201con fire\u201d before becoming \u201creally itchy\u201d due to his sunburn.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cWhenever I itch it, it looks like a snow globe. It looks like confetti \u2013 white freckled confetti is pouring off of my head. It\u2019s disgusting.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nConan explained because he has \u201cso much hair\u201d he had never considered his scalp could become badly sunburnt.<\/p>\n
\nHe said he was advised to apply oil to help the skin recover but forgot he was due to record his podcast with actor and comedian Molly Shannon.<\/p>\n
\nConan added: \u201cI come in and I look like I\u2019m in Sha Na Na. I\u2019m a greaseball. I\u2019m so greasy. I\u2019m Frankie (Valli.)\u201d<\/p>\n
\nContinuing the joke, Conan compared himself to a 1950s street tough guy.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cI look like I want to fight one of you in the parking lot by swinging a chain at you in 1952, or come at you with a switchblade. <\/p>\n
\n\u201cI really feel different. I just want to fight people on the street. I want to get a hot rod and drive it around.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nHe then referenced the 1978 musical Grease, saying: \u201cI want to get Rizzo pregnant, so that Rizzo has a bun in the oven \u2013\u00a0you know what I mean?\u201d<\/p>\n
\nStill referring to the film, Conan added: \u201cI\u2019m one of the Thunderbirds that is easily 55 years old. I\u2019m going to put a bubble-gum cigarette behind my ear.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nAgain calling himself a \u201cgreaseball\u201d, he said: \u201cI\u2019m just gonna keep rubbing oil into my head until this my skull heals.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nConan also praised Hillary Clinton for wearing what he described as a \u201cgiant\u201d and \u201chuge\u201d hat at the event which left him suffering sunburn.<\/p>\n
\nHe added: \u201cShe\u2019s smart. She\u2019s laughing at me right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nPhotographs of Conan\u2019s noticeably slicked hairstyle quickly spread across social media earlier this week, with users comparing him to characters from The Sopranos and joking he resembled a used-car salesman. <\/p>\n
\nConan later reposted several of the comments on Instagram.<\/p>\n
\nAmong them were messages reading: \u201cWho hosed down Conan?\u201d and: \u201cSeeing Conan\u2019s hair like this feels illegal.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nConan\u2019s distinctive hairstyle has long been one of his defining features. <\/p>\n
\nSpeaking to 60 Minutes in 2010, he joked that the towering quiff helped him stand out early in his television career.<\/p>\n
\nAt the time, he described it as \u201cstructurally sound\u201d and added: \u201cIf there\u2019s an earthquake and you\u2019re in the Pacific Northwest, get under my hair.\u201d<\/p>\n
\nConan, who has enjoyed renewed success in recent years through his podcast and the travel series Conan O\u2019Brien Must Go, also received widespread acclaim earlier this year after hosting the Academy Awards, with his performance prompting strong reviews and renewed attention on his decades-long career in comedy.<\/p>\n
