William Shatner<\/strong><\/a> and Melanie Shatner<\/strong><\/a> are opening up about a shared medical experience.<\/p>\n

The 95-year-old Star Trek <\/em>alum and his 61-year-old daughter got candid in a new interview with People<\/em><\/a> about both battling cancer at the same time years ago.<\/p>\n

Melanie<\/strong> had been getting treated for stage 4 breast cancer in June 2023 when William <\/strong>was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma, which spread to his lungs and brain.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember vividly thinking, \u2018I don\u2019t have the strength to take care of myself and lose my father at the same time,\u2019\u201d Melanie<\/strong> reflected. <\/p>\n

She had initially found the lump in her breast by chance in July 2022, recalling: \u201cI woke up in the middle of the night, and my finger moved up right beneath my breast. I felt a little bump and thought, \u2018It\u2019s just a bug bite.’”<\/p>\n

Testing later resulted in a positive breast cancer diagnosis, and they found it had spread to lymph nodes in her chest. Treatment included multiple rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy, and 30 radiation therapy treatments. <\/p>\n

\u201cChemo was the most physically draining, and the radiation I found so emotionally draining,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Mid-treatment, her dad William<\/strong> found a lump on his cheek.<\/p>\n

\u201cI went to the family doctor, and he said, \u2018It\u2019s your salivary gland. It\u2019s blocked. Just massage it,’” William<\/strong> recalled.<\/p>\n

A plastic surgeon friend disagreed after checking out the growing lump: \u201cHe placed his hands on my cheeks, and he said with love in his voice, \u2018You better get this out.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

William <\/strong>had the tumor removed, followed by two years of immunotherapy to target the cancer in his lungs and brain. <\/p>\n

\u201cThey said, \u2018You got cancer. If you came in later, you would have been dead.\u2019 See? That\u2019s my life. I think the universe is taking care of me,” William <\/strong>said of his own diagnosis.<\/p>\n

Happily, both of them are cancer-free today.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m thinking of the miracle of a hummingbird, and of my dog taking a ball, and my children. I\u2019m aware of the magic of it all,” William <\/strong>said of embracing life today.<\/p>\n

William Shatner <\/strong>had actually reacted to rumors that he had brain cancer<\/a> just a few months ago.<\/p>\n

The two will be launching a new weekly podcast, called No Time but Now<\/em>, to have discussions with health experts and other cancer survivors.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s easy for us in this lovely home to say, \u2018Make your life meaningful.\u2019 It\u2019s much more difficult to be poverty-stricken and wonder how you\u2019re going to get through it. I\u2019ve been there. But it\u2019s also possible to endure that and be aware of the beauty around you,\u201d William <\/strong>said of the endeavor.<\/p>\n

\u201c[Overcoming cancer] changed my life. I\u2019m not so afraid anymore, and there\u2019s so much freedom and joy,” Melanie<\/strong> added.<\/p>\n
