She explained: \u201cDuring this comedy sketch, Jason Alexander repeatedly rubbed his phone across my breasts while saying there was \u2018no signal\u2019 in my head but \u2018plenty of signal\u2019 in my chest.\u201d<\/p>\n
Courtney\u2019s age was also a factor, as she wrote: \u201cLater in the sketch, he joked that when I turned 18 he\u2019d like to take me behind the couch and \u2018have his way\u2019 with me.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIMDb credits him as one of the writers of the episode,\u201d Courtney noted.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs an adult, that fact has become harder \u2014 not easier \u2014 for me to understand,\u201d she reasoned.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was a minor,\u201d Courtney emphasized. \u201cI didn\u2019t have the legal power to decide whether I wanted to participate. The contracts were signed by adults. The paycheck went to Doug.\u201d<\/p>\n
She continued: \u201cThe production moved forward. I was the only child in the room. I felt so alone.\u201d<\/p>\n
Courtney reflected: \u201cLooking back now, I don\u2019t see comedy. \u201cThat\u2019s the point,\u201d she highlighted.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t change what happened to me,\u201d Courtney acknowledged. \u201cBut I can ask myself: How did so many adults look at a minor and decide this was acceptable?\u201d<\/p>\n
She affirmed: \u201cThat\u2019s exactly why I speak out today. Children deserve laws that protect them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Courtney concluded: \u201cThey shouldn\u2019t have to become adults before realizing the law should have protected them all along.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n
<\/svg><\/button><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\nCourtney is, of course, absolutely right. And it also makes sense that time has not made this make more <\/em>sense.<\/p>\nWhen you\u2019re 20, a 17-year-old is a minor but likely also a peer. Perhaps a former classmate. When you\u2019re in your 30s, a 17-year-old is close to half your age and you can recall how grown up you felt<\/em> at that age while also appreciating the context of how naive that worldview was.<\/p>\nBy the way, Jason Alexander spoke to Page Six<\/em> in a statement that fully acknowledged and apologized for the skit.<\/p>\n\u201cLooking back at the comedy sketch in which Ms. Stodden and I participated in 2012, I completely agree that it was inappropriate and I truly regret it,\u201d he began.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut more importantly, I am deeply sorry for any harm or distress it has caused Ms. Stodden,\u201d Alexander continued. \u201cI offer her my sincerest apologies.\u201d<\/p>\n
Resolving to be a better person than you were in the past and apologizing for past mistakes is, sometimes, all that one can do. And, of course, passing more laws to protect more children \u2014 from child marriage and from other forms of exploitation.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
