Cillian Murphy<\/a> has slammed a \u201chomophobic\u201d campaign video for presidential candidate Ron DeSantis that features footage from \u2018Peaky Blinders\u2019.<\/p>\n

Cillian Murphy has slammed a \u2018homophobic\u2019\u00a0campaign video for presidential candidate Ron DeSantis that features footage from \u2018Peaky Blinders\u2019<\/p>\n

The \u2018Oppenheimer\u2019 actor, 47, teamed up with creators of the hit gangster drama, in which he played ruthless Tommy Shelby, to slam the use of the clip in a promo which has been shared by supporters of the 44-year-old US election hopeful and branded anti-gay by critics.<\/p>\n

Published via a popular Twitter account called \u2018DeSantis War Room\u2019, the video includes several images of Cillian as Tommy and appears to target former president Donald Trump<\/a>, 77, for publicly supporting LGBTQ+ rights \u2013 and highlighting DeSantis\u2019 targeting of the community on several occasions.<\/p>\n

Cillian, \u2018Peaky Blinders\u2019 writer Steven Knight, 63, and its maker Tiger Aspect Productions, said in a statement shared on Twitter: \u201cWe confirm the footage of Tommy Shelby\u2019s character used within the video posted by Ron DeSantis\u2019 campaign was obtained without permission or official licence.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not support nor endorse the video’s narrative and strongly disapprove of the use of the content in this manner.\u201d<\/p>\n

\nGovernor of Florida DeSantis recently approved a new bill restricting the discussion of gender and pronouns in schools in a law branded by critics as \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d.<\/p>\n

\nThe video was shared by DeSantis supporters to coincide with the end of Pride Month.<\/p>\n

\nRichard Grenell, 56 \u2013 the first openly gay White House Cabinet official when he was appointed by Trump in 2020 as acting director of national intelligence during \u2013 said the clip was \u201cundeniably homophobic\u201d.<\/p>\n

\nDeSantis\u2019 campaign has yet to respond to requests for comment over Cillian and the \u2018Peaky Blinders\u2019 creators\u2019 statement.<\/p>\n

\nDeSantis is hoping to build support with his hard-right positions on abortion, transgender rights and other issues.<\/p>\n

\nWhen they were asked for a comment on the video, Trump\u2019s 2024 presidential campaign team highlighted a tweet from the ex-president\u2019s adviser Jason Miller who had suggested \u201csomebody\u2019s getting fired\u201d over the DeSantis video.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
