Koch Theater in New York City\u2019s Lincoln Center. As the NBA\u2019s first openly gay player, Collins was recognized for his impact on LGBTQ+ visibility in professional sports.<\/p>\n<p>A video package featured Collins\u2019 husband, <strong>Brunson Green<\/strong>, breaking his silence on the NBA pioneer\u2019s death from stage IV glioblastoma diagnosis in May 2026.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen he first got diagnosed he was scrolling Wikipedia about glioblastoma and [how] basically it\u2019s a death sentence,\u201d Green recalled. \u201cHe wanted to fight it and see how long he could sustain his life because it might actually help other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason\u2019s twin brother, <strong>Jarron Collins<\/strong>, accepted the award on his behalf. As he spoke, Brunson was shown in tears as he looked on from the audience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish my brother was here to accept this award but I find myself honored to accept this award on his behalf,\u201d Jarron, 47, said.<\/p>\n<p>He went on, \u201cWhen Jason was diagnosed with glioblastoma, he was willing to share his experience, his treatment and his plans with the hope that if not for him, then for others. I pledge to make sure that tonight is not the end of my brother\u2019s legacy \u2014 it\u2019s just the beginning. There are so many more people who can benefit from hearing his story and it\u2019s our responsibility to keep telling it and carry on what he started.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>News broke in June that Jason would become the latest recipient of the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage, which is given to an individual who has made a difference off the field by standing up for their beliefs. In a statement at the time, Jarron, 47, said, \u201cIt is profoundly bittersweet but deeply meaningful to accept the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage on my brother\u2019s behalf, celebrating a legacy of visibility, strength and love that will endure forever.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The ESPYs honor comes two months after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/sports\/news\/jason-collins-dead-1st-openly-gay-nba-player-was-47\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason\u2019s family announced his death<\/a> in a May 12 statement to the NBA. He was 47.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are heartbroken to share that Jason Collins, our beloved husband, son, brother and uncle, has died after a valiant fight with glioblastoma,\u201d the statement read.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJason changed lives in unexpected ways and was an inspiration to all who knew him and to those who admired him from afar,\u201d the statement continued. \u201cWe are grateful for the outpouring of love and prayers over the past eight months and for the exceptional medical care Jason received from his doctors and nurses. Our family will miss him dearly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later that month, <em>Us<\/em> exclusively revealed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/sports\/news\/former-nba-player-jason-collins-cause-of-death-revealed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jason died of respiratory failure<\/a>. According to his death certificate, several underlying conditions contributed, including a blood clot, the buildup of fluid in his brain and brain cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Jason publicly shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/celebrity-news\/news\/nba-star-jason-collins-diagnosed-with-deadliest-form-of-brain-cancer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his stage IV glioblastoma diagnosis<\/a> in December 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat makes glioblastoma so dangerous is that it grows within a very finite, contained space \u2014 the skull \u2014 and it\u2019s very aggressive and can expand,\u201d he told ESPN at the time. \u201cWhat makes it so difficult to treat in my case is that it\u2019s surrounded by the brain and is encroaching upon the frontal lobe \u2014 which is what makes you, \u2018you.\u2019 My glioblastoma is \u2018multiforme.\u2019 Imagine a monster with tentacles spreading across the underside of my brain the width of a baseball.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason added that his glioblastoma was \u201cextraordinary for all the wrong reasons.\u201d He described it as \u201cwild type\u201d because it had \u201call these mutations that make it even more deadly and difficult to treat.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>At the time, Jason \u2014 who married husband Green in May 2025 \u2014 also reflected on coming out more than a decade earlier.<\/p>\n<div id=\"news-block\">\n<div class=\"newsletter-form  \">\n\t<br \/>\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/wp-content\/themes\/us-weekly\/assets\/img\/newsletter-bg-wide.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"newsletter-form__background background-wide\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"newsletter-signup__success\" aria-live=\"polite\">\n<h3>Thank You!<\/h3>\n<p>You have successfully subscribed.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<p>\u201cWhen I came out publicly as the first active gay basketball player in 2013, I told a lot of the people closest to me before I did so,\u201d he noted. \u201cI wasn\u2019t worried it would leak before the story came out because I trusted the people I told. And guess what? Nothing leaked. I got to tell my own story, the way I wanted to. And now I can honestly say, the past 12 years since have been the best of my life. Your life is so much better when you just show up as your true self, unafraid to be your true self, in public or private. This is me. This is what I\u2019m dealing with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jason hoped sharing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmagazine.com\/sports\/news\/inside-late-nba-trailblazer-jason-collins-final-months\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">his cancer journey<\/a> with the world could be similarly impactful.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter I came out, someone I really respect told me that my choice to live openly could help someone who I might never meet,\u201d he recalled. \u201cI\u2019ve held onto that for years.
