Those mods may be \u201csubject to additional actions,\u201d such as losing the ability to join future moderator teams.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Going NSFW puts up an age gate and means that the subreddit is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/RedditforBusiness\/comments\/bdwlin\/update_to_nsfw_advertising_policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">not eligible for advertising<\/a>, creating friction for users, and potentially affecting Reddit\u2019s ability to monetize the channel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">As of Thursday evening, r\/PICS had dropped the NSFW designation, along with r\/military. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In an email to <em>The Verge<\/em>, a moderator for the military subreddit said that the mods decided to revert the NSFW designation because the community is a helpful resource for veterans experiencing mental health crises. The mod said that if Reddit removed the team, it could put the community at risk.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Reddit didn\u2019t immediately reply to a request for comment. For a previous story, spokesperson Tim Rathschmidt said that \u201cmoderators incorrectly marking a community as NSFW is a violation of both our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redditinc.com\/policies\/content-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Content Policy<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.redditinc.com\/policies\/moderator-code-of-conduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moderator Code of Conduct<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Here is the message from Reddit, as shared <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pics\/comments\/14so8wz\/update_rpics_is_being_forced_to_break_the\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">by the r\/PICS moderators<\/a>:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<blockquote class=\"duet--article--blockquote ewrhy30\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy37 _1xwtict0\">This is a final warning for inaccurately labeling your community NSFW which is a violation of the Mod Code of Conduct rule 2. Your subreddit has not historically been considered NSFW nor would they under our current policies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy37 _1xwtict0\"><strong>Please immediately correct the NSFW labeling on your subreddit. Failure to do so will result in action being taken on your moderator team by the end of this week. This means moderators involved in this activity will be removed from this mod team. Moderators may also be subject to additional actions, e.g., losing the ability to join mod teams in the future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup ewrhy37 _1xwtict0\">Lastly, if you suddenly begin to post, or approve content that features sexually explicit content to your community in order to justify the NSFW label, we will immediately remove and permanently suspend moderators who have participated in this action.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">Rule 2 in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redditinc.com\/policies\/moderator-code-of-conduct\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Moderator Code of Conduct<\/a> says that moderators should \u201cset appropriate and reasonable expectations.\u201d Last month, Reddit admin account ModCodeofConduct said that it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/21\/23768836\/reddit-changing-safe-for-work-communities-nsfw-not-acceptable\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cnot acceptable\u201d<\/a> to switch from safe for work to NSFW in protest, and a few communities changed back after feeling the pressure from Reddit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">In the case of r\/PICS, it switched to focusing entirely on posts <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2023\/6\/17\/23764729\/reddit-users-pics-gifs-subreddits-john-oliver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">about comedian John Oliver<\/a> after a community vote, and on Monday, the moderators switched it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pics\/comments\/14pmzn1\/well_ill_be_damned_rpics_is_nsfw_now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">to NSFW<\/a> because they felt that content in the subreddit was in violation of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/wiki\/contentpolicy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit wiki page titled \u201cReddit Content Policy.\u201d<\/a> That page defines NSFW as the following: \u201cContent that contains nudity, pornography, or profanity, which a reasonable viewer may not want to be seen accessing in a public or formal setting such as in a workplace should be tagged as NSFW.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">However, in screenshots of messages between r\/PICS and Reddit seen by <em>The Verge<\/em>, Reddit said that the wiki page is outdated (the last edit was made four years ago) and pointed to a different page, also titled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redditinc.com\/policies\/content-policy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Reddit Content Policy<\/a>, which doesn\u2019t define rules for NSFW. Rule 6 is perhaps the closest: \u201cEnsure people have predictable experiences on Reddit by properly labeling content and communities, particularly content that is graphic, sexually-explicit, or offensive.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">On r\/PICS, the rules explicitly say that \u201cno explicit pornography or gore\u201d is allowed, and from what I\u2019ve seen, posts in the community hold to that rule. On Wednesday, r\/PICS also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/pics\/comments\/14rn8zd\/the_rpics_moderators_cant_respond_to_reddit\/jqt1lha\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued that<\/a> \u201cthe visible marking of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/PICS\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/PICS<\/a>\u00a0as NSFW is vital to establishing reasonable expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component clear-both block md:float-left md:mr-30 md:w-[320px] lg:-ml-100\">\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-pullquote mb-20\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup relative bg-repeating-lines-dark bg-[length:1px_1.2em] pb-8 font-polysans text-28 font-medium leading-120 tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20  dark:bg-repeating-lines-light dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple\">\u201cReddit\u2019s actions are on par with the most dystopian of companies seen in Night City.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"duet--article--article-body-component\">\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph mb-20 font-fkroman text-18 leading-160 -tracking-1 selection:bg-franklin-20 dark:text-white dark:selection:bg-blurple [&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-franklin dark:[&amp;_a:hover]:shadow-highlight-blurple [&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-black dark:[&amp;_a]:shadow-underline-white\">The moderators of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/cyberpunkgame\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">r\/cyberpunkgame<\/a> made a post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/cyberpunkgame\/comments\/14rnt14\/the_reddit_admins_have_threatened_us_demanding_we\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on Wednesday<\/a> about a message from Reddit regarding the community\u2019s NSFW designation, so I asked if they had received this new message as well. \u201cWe haven\u2019t received that message, but we stand in support with the communities who did,\u201d the moderators wrote in a Reddit DM to me. \u201cThis is a worrying development, and something that hits close to home for <em>Cyberpunk<\/em> fans.
