All American<\/em> is gearing up for its last quarter.<\/p>\n

After eight seasons of football, friendship, romance and heartbreak<\/a>, the CW sports dramedy is preparing for one last drive \u2014 and showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll<\/strong> is determined to give every character the ending they\u2019ve earned.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I didn\u2019t want to do in a final season was take these characters on a completely new journey,\u201d Carroll exclusively shares in the latest issue of Us<\/em>, noting that season 8 will unfold over the course of one pivotal week with flashbacks filling in the six months since the season 7 finale<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I really wanted to explore this season, as we were bringing it to an end, was, \u2018OK, has all of the character development that they\u2019ve all went through as they grew into these adults on the show prepared them for what ultimately becomes one of the most surprising and arguably toughest weeks of their lives?\u2019 And that is what we\u2019re showing in season 8.\u201d<\/p>\n

By season\u2019s end, Carroll promises viewers will see every original and next-gen character reach a major crossroads. That includes returning OGs Spencer James (Daniel Ezra<\/strong>) and Olivia Baker (Samantha Logan<\/strong>), who Carroll says are \u201cvery much at the heart<\/a>\u201d of the season as they prepare to welcome their twin girls. Their story, she explains, will ripple through the lives of everyone around them.<\/p>\n

As for Jordan Baker (Michael Evans Behling<\/strong>) and Layla Keating (Greta Onieogou<\/strong>), married life won\u2019t come without challenges. After spending six months apart, Carroll says they\u2019ve both experienced significant personal growth, putting their individual dreams on a major \u201ccollision course.\u201d<\/p>\n

But before fans start to spiral, series star Michael Evans Behling<\/strong> ensures that no one should panic. \u201cIt\u2019s not broken, but it\u2019s frayed,\u201d the actor teases, promising the twosome will \u201cfigure [things] out in typical Jordan and Layla fashion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, All American\u2019s<\/em> final season isn\u2019t about creating more heartbreak but about celebrating the journey that made the show one of The CW\u2019s defining YA dramas.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to take All American<\/em> home that has meant so much to so many of us for so long [means so much],\u201d Carroll says. \u201cThere is just [a ton] of pride in what we\u2019ve accomplished.\u201d<\/p>\n

Onieogou, meanwhile, feels endlessly \u201clucky\u201d to have spent so much time in Layla\u2019s shoes alongside her fellow cast and crew.<\/p>\n

\u201cJust to be able to tell the stories that we got to be able to tell in much detail and with so much care,\u201d she shares. \u201cYou only really get to do that when you have so much time. Not only time with the characters, but time with the people who really help develop all of these stories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behling, 30, echoes his costar\u2019s sentiment, noting that the rarity of spending eight seasons on network TV isn\u2019t lost on him.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels amazing to have been able to be a part of this show from day one, and to bring it to its end,\u201d he tells Us.<\/em> \u201cI just really hope that people who continue to watch the show, who have watched the show throughout, find that joy and find that sense of completion and that sense of appreciation for these characters and these stories that we\u2019ve been so fortunate to tell.\u201d<\/p>\n

All American<\/em> airs on The CW Mondays at 8 p.m. ET. Below, Carroll, Behling and Onieogou break down what fans can expect from the show\u2019s final season:<\/p>\n

Season 8\u2019s 1-Week Timeline<\/h2>\n

Carroll tells Us<\/em> that season 8 will play out over the course of about one week and lead up to a \u201cbig event\u201d \u2014 which was teased in the two-part premiere when Jordan ran off the football field in a hurry.<\/p>\n

The show will also feature glimpses of what went down during the six-month time jump off-screen, or hint at what might come for the characters down the line.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re going to have flashbacks where we fill some of the gaps in the six months that passed since last season,\u201d Carroll explains. \u201cThere will also be some flash forwards. But for the most part, the season\u2019s story line is contained within one week of their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carroll says every character will ultimately face a \u201ccrossroads of a big decision\u201d in their lives, with every episode shining a light on one particular character.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo for our OG cast, it\u2019s really about what happens when this week ends up determining whether they\u2019re going to achieve their dreams and reach their destiny that they set out on back in season 1 of the show,\u201d Carroll shares, \u201cand for our new cast, it\u2019s really a question of, \u2018Does what happens this week alter how they kick off the rest of their lives?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She adds: \u201cAnd I will tease that we do answer that question for every single one of our OG cast members, and the next generation as well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Behling, for his part, was thrilled All American<\/em> took a page from The Pitt\u2019s<\/em> condensed timeline structure.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt had us a bit more locked in and just really knowing where we were going and what we were doing,\u201d he tells Us. \u201cAnd as you\u2019ll watch the series, you\u2019ll see, like, yes, it does take place over one week, but we do have moments where we do go forward in time, back in time, and I think that\u2019ll be really cool for viewers to see. Moments that maybe aren\u2019t taking place in the week, but that will round out the week and will make more sense.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spencer and Olivia Return \u2014 Plus, Babies!<\/h2>\n

Carroll says that fan favorite duo Spencer and Olivia, who are now married and awaiting the arrival of twin girls, will be seen \u201con and off\u201d after Ezra and Logan exited as series regulars in season 6<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat they are going through, and the awaiting of the arrival of their twins, is very much at the heart of what\u2019s spilling over into everyone else\u2019s lives this season,\u201d Carroll shares, noting that the pair are included in the series of characters who will have an episode dedicated to their journey.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach episode is dedicated to one character\u2019s goodbye,\u201d Carroll tells Us<\/em>, \u201cand what I mean by that is one of the characters becomes the A story, and it\u2019s all about focusing on their perspective and what the impact is to the rest of their lives as everyone\u2019s stories intertwine.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jordan and Layla\u2019s Romance Woes<\/h2>\n

After spending six months apart, Jordan and Layla found there was a disconnect between them during All American\u2019s<\/em> season 8 premiere. According to Carroll, those issues will be a through line as they adjust to the ups and downs of being a young married couple.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen you separate for such a long chunk of time in a new growing relationship, there\u2019s a lot of growth that happens at that six months separate from each other, and so when you bring them back together as a married couple with that, those sort of separate growth trajectories that are happening, the puzzle pieces don\u2019t quite come back as seamlessly,\u201d Carroll explains. \u201cAnd it\u2019s not that anyone is set out to hurt anyone, but it\u2019s that they got used to operating in life kind of without each other for a while.\u201d<\/p>\n

Carroll says that Jordan and Layla will have to figure out how to do life together, navigating their own dreams while supporting each other as \u201csoulmates\u201d and true partners.<\/p>\n

\u201cThose are often going to be on a collision course, because someone has to hold down the floor while someone is pursuing a dream and vice versa,\u201d she continues. \u201cThat\u2019s where they sort of find themselves this season: Jordan is on the cusp of a dream he didn\u2019t even realize he had, because his dream kind of changed, and Layla has been away, and it has reprioritized dreams for her. Now that they\u2019re coming back to be a unit as a couple, the pieces aren\u2019t quite fitting back together again.\u201d<\/p>\n

Onieogou points out that even in a \u201chealthy, loving relationship,\u201d there are trials and tribulations \u2014 especially when both people are so young.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re really at the beginning of their married life together. So, as with anything, six months apart is hard,\u201d she tells Us<\/em>, teasing that fans will \u201cdefinitely learn more\u201d about Layla\u2019s headspace over the course of the season.<\/p>\n

Despite their issues, Behling promises that the pair will come out better in the end.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a really beautiful reconciliation,\u201d he shares. \u201cAnd I mean, it\u2019s not like they broke up. They didn\u2019t break up! They\u2019re just afraid, and they\u2019re going through something.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jordan\u2019s Future<\/h2>\n

While kicking off season 8 as Crenshaw\u2019s head football coach, Behling tells Us <\/em>that Jordan\u2019s career could be taking a new path before the series finale.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of changing,\u201d Behling says, noting that Crenshaw winning the state finals against Beverly High in season 7 was \u201cfantastic\u201d for his job and his confidence moving forward. \u201cJordan sometimes feels not good enough, but I think that that win was huge for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

He teases that as the season progresses, Jordan will be offered a \u201cdream\u201d opportunity that might \u201cruffle some feathers,\u201d leaving him faced \u201cwith a pretty large decision.\u201d Jordan will seemingly try and \u201chandle\u201d the situation on his own before ultimately turning to others for help, including a mysterious someone \u201cvery, very important to him,\u201d Behling teases.<\/p>\n

Babies for Jordan and Layla?<\/h2>\n

Although Jordan and Layla decided to hold off before having children in season 7, Behling says expanding their family could be in the couple\u2019s future.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think that [Jordan] wants to do everything with Layla. I think that he wants to give her everything that she wants and desires in life, and if that happens to be a child or a series of children, and so be it,\u201d he tells Us<\/em>. \u201cWe do touch on that answer in the finale, and I think that people will enjoy what occurs. I think after these eight seasons, and after this last season especially, you\u2019ll look at the two of them and realize that they\u2019re both ready for whatever comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n

Spencer and Jordan\u2019s Tension<\/h2>\n

According to Behling, Jordan and Spencer will continue to navigate their brotherhood as they have since the show began \u2014 but it won\u2019t all be smooth<\/a> sailing.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt first, there is a little bit of annoyance on Jordan\u2019s end towards Spencer because of what takes place during this week,\u201d he says with a laugh. \u201cThey end up coming back together, and it\u2019s all figured out, but the dynamic between them is always going to remain that same, \u2018We are brothers, but we\u2019re grown now, and we have responsibilities, and we\u2019re going to be there for one another whenever we can.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, the characters are \u201cbrothers for life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI love the dynamic they have,\u201d Behling adds. \u201cThe fact that they can come to blows at certain times, and then come back and be so full of love.\u201d<\/p>\n

Olivia and Layla\u2019s Sisterhood<\/h2>\n

Layla and Olivia are another set of BFFs who have seen their ups and downs, primarily during their love triangle high school days as they both navigated romantic feelings for Spencer. Those times, however, have long passed, and Carroll says the twosome\u2019s love for one another will be on display throughout season 8.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have an episode that\u2019s 90 percent Olivia and Layla centric, that\u2019s really a honoring of that friendship that started so young and went through so many ups and downs that ended in sisterhood,\u201d she tells Us, noting that it was important to take \u201cthe time to really say goodbye to that friendship\u201d while also paving the way for their \u201cnew sisterhood in a different way.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe two of them are pretty much carry the episode,\u201d she teases.<\/p>\n

Onieogou, 35, tells Us<\/em> that it was \u201creally important\u201d for her and Logan to portray a \u201crealistic\u201d friendship throughout the series and showcase their \u201cown foundation\u201d outside of their relationship to the men.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m really excited for people to see it.\u201d<\/p>\n

While the OG characters will be busy setting up the next chapters of their lives, Carroll says the Vortex 2.0 will also have their hands full in high school \u2014 with love triangles expanding into love \u201chexagons\u201d and plenty of more drama.<\/p>\n
