The couple, who got engaged in September 2020, started out as two friends in Texas<\/a> who went to school together. The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback<\/a> became close with Matthews in 2011 when he was just a freshman at Whitehouse High School.<\/p>\n

After giving her a rose and a Valentine\u2019s Day card<\/a> the following year, the pair\u2019s friendship morphed into something more. Throughout their time in high school, the athletes rooted each other<\/a> \u2014 Mahomes played both football and baseball while Matthews was a soccer star \u2014 and were each other\u2019s go-to dates for dances in the gym.<\/p>\n

The teenage sweethearts<\/a> went to different colleges, but both stayed in Texas, which helped keep their relationship alive.<\/p>\n

The couple, who share two dogs and a home in Kansas City, Missouri, have been by each other\u2019s sides through all the highs and lows<\/a> of their adult years, including Mahomes winning Super Bowl LIV in 2020<\/a> and losing Super Bowl LV in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In between his Super Bowl appearances, the quarterback proposed to his longtime love<\/a> on the same day he received his championship ring at Arrowhead Stadium in September 2020.<\/p>\n

Mahomes joined his wife as a part owner of the Kansas City Current more than two years after Matthews became involved with the team. The women\u2019s soccer organization was also cofounded by Chris<\/strong> and Angie Long<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am thankful for the chance to join @brittanylynne as part of the @thekccurrent ownership team,\u201d the quarterback wrote via an Instagram statement. \u201cShe and the Longs have done an incredible job building a world-class organization and I am excited to join another championship-caliber club as it continues to make history.\u201d<\/p>\n

Matthews, for her part, said in the team\u2019s statement that she is “so thrilled to make this a family affair.\u201d She noted that her husband\u201d has been a huge supporter behind-the-scenes.
