Those in-house models, known as MAI, were increasingly being used to power apps like Word and Excel, the outlet noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The story raised an increasingly common question about the two companies, which were once seemingly inseparable, and have recently sent <a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/markets\/article\/microsoft-and-openais-relationship-continues-to-crumble-183330195.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mixed signals<\/a> about the status of their situationship: Were the two companies drifting apart?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now, OpenAI is attempting to put any insinuations of such a break to rest. During <a href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2026\/07\/09\/openai-launches-its-new-family-of-models-with-gpt-5-6\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OpenAI\u2019s launch of GPT 5.6<\/a> on Thursday, the company announced that it would become the \u201cpreferred model\u201d powering Microsoft\u2019s 365 Copilot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OpenAI noted in <a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/openai.com\/index\/gpt-5-6-preferred-model-microsoft-365-copilot\/\" target=\"_blank\">a blog post<\/a> published Thursday that GPT 5.6 would support Microsoft users across the company\u2019s suite of productivity apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Cowork.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur partnership with Microsoft has always been about bringing the benefits of advanced AI to more individuals and organizations, and we\u2019re excited to continue building on that shared commitment,\u201d OpenAI wrote in a blog post. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What being a \u201cpreferred model\u201d actually means isn\u2019t entirely clear, other than that OpenAI\u2019s software will continue to power Microsoft\u2019s apps.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, it was never reported that ChatGPT\u2019s software would stop powering Microsoft\u2019s apps \u2014 merely that Microsoft was relying increasingly on its own software in an effort to reduce costs.
