Jerry O\u2019Connell <\/strong><\/a>admits that parenting 17-year-old twin daughters isn\u2019t easy, but working with Sophia Bush<\/strong><\/a> definitely earned him some brownie points at home.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy daughters have watched every episode of One Tree Hill<\/em><\/a>, and they wanted to go to dinner with Brooke,\u201d O\u2019Connell, 52, told Us Weekly<\/em> exclusively of his Summer\u2019s Last Resort<\/em> costar, referencing her character from the beloved teen drama. \u201cThey were very excited about that. Basically, Sophia is the link between myself and my daughters. That\u2019s the only communication I have.\u201d<\/p>\n

He kept the joke going, adding, \u201cI actually don\u2019t even talk to them anymore. I just send messages to Sophia, who then talks to them in emoji and young people dialect.\u201d<\/p>\n

The actor shares 17-year-old twin daughters Charlie and Dolly with his wife, Rebecca Romijn<\/strong>, and Bush, 43, appreciated the adoration from their girls.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe joke became, like, they never wanted to talk to any of us,\u201d the actress recalled to Us<\/em>. \u201cAnd then we all went to dinner for [Jerry\u2019s] birthday in L.A., and they came, and I was like, \u2018Oh, the girls wanna\u2026\u2019 It turns out they want to hang out with us. We\u2019re pretty cool. So I feel like we really got there.\u201d<\/p>\n

To be fair, O\u2019Connell got plenty of love from the young ones in Bush\u2019s life as well.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn set, you\u2019d figure out the time change, and then everyone would be FaceTiming their families, and we were all talking to each other\u2019s families, and our kids would be like, \u2018Mr. Jerry!\u2019 like, so excited,\u201d she recalled of her own brood with partner Ashlyn Harris<\/strong> and her two daughters, Sloane, 5, and Ocean, 3.<\/p>\n

Both O\u2019Connell and Bush applied what they know about parenting to their roles as Milly and Glenn in Summer\u2019s Last Resort<\/em>, a couple who tries to unite their blended family on a tropical vacation, much to the dismay of Milly\u2019s high-strung daughter, Summer (Violet McGraw<\/strong>), and Glenn\u2019s free-spirited daughter, Sadie (Clara Alexandrova<\/strong>).<\/p>\n

\u201cMost of the friends in my peer group have toddlers of varying ages, but we have three girlfriends that had kids really young, like they\u2019re graduating high school now, and so to be in that position as characters where we\u2019re playing mother and daughter, but we\u2019re also playing friends is a really interesting dynamic,\u201d Bush said of her chemistry with McGraw, 15. \u201cI feel so protective of [her], but I\u2019m also like, \u2018Should we go to dinner?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

While his own dynamic with McGraw\u2019s character onscreen makes for a great movie, O\u2019Connell is currently dealing with the woes of teenage girlhood in real life.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m a much older parent to my kids, so we don\u2019t have anything in common,\u201d he joked to Us<\/em>. \u201cAll I do is say, like, get off your phones. Go outside. What are you doing? Stop with the selfies!\u201d<\/p>\n

With that being said, leaning into the embarrassment of a role like Glenn allowed O\u2019Connell to live out his dadhood dreams.<\/p>\n

\u201cLiving with two teenage girls made me really appreciate Summer\u2019s Last Resort<\/em> and also made me play a lot of the scenes, I\u2019m not kidding, I did things on the movie that I know I should never do around my children, because they won\u2019t talk to me for months at a time,\u201d he told Us<\/em>. \u201cI was like, \u2018Oh, what would I do that would anger my daughters if I did it?\u2019 And I could see that it was really working, because I could see that I was angering Violet IRL \u2014 that means in real life for some of your older readers.\u201d<\/p>\n

McGraw countered with an immediate \u201cWhen?!\u201d \u2014 though O\u2019Connell had an example ready to go.<\/p>\n

\u201cI mean, when we had scenes with the dolphin and stuff, I was doing things that would mortify you and mortify my daughters,\u201d he recalled.<\/p>\n
