Kaley Cuoco<\/strong><\/a> had an emotional reaction to filming a breakup scene in The Big Bang Theory<\/em><\/a> weeks after she and costar Johnny Galecki<\/strong><\/a> split in real life.<\/p>\n

While appearing on the Monday, June 29, episode of \u201cThe Official Big Bang Theory Podcast,\u201d<\/a> director Anthony Rich<\/strong> recalled his first day on set which happened to be while filming the end of season 3. Rich, now 58, directed the episode \u201cThe Spaghetti Catalyst\u201d which followed the aftermath of the breakup between Penny and Leonard, played by Cuoco and Galecki, respectively. The character\u2019s split came shortly after the actors called it quits.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was a lot going on that week,\u201d Rich joked, explaining that Cuoco and Galecki dated<\/a> for \u201cabout two years\u201d and split \u201cfour to six weeks earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n

Host Jessica Radloff<\/strong> added that Cuoco and Galecki handled the change in their personal lives \u201cbeautifully\u201d as it was a \u201creally difficult\u201d situation.<\/p>\n

The actors worked together on the Big Bang Theory for 12 seasons from 2007 to 2019. When the series began, they sparked an [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSo now their characters are breaking up, and this is just hitting a little too close to home,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Rich recalled while filming the post-breakup scenes for Penny and Leonard, both Cuoco and Galecki felt like the script was \u201cnot giving proper attention to the demise of the relationship.\u201d Rich explained that the writers did not want to give fans a \u201creal sad breakup episode.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople don\u2019t wanna watch that. They\u2019re here to laugh,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Rich also shared that when it was time for Galecki and Cuoco to reunite in front of the cameras \u201cit was hard for them to even get through it.\u201d Rich claimed that Cuoco \u201cstarted sobbing\u201d and went off stage to collect herself. When Rich went to check on her, they had a sweet heart-to-heart.<\/p>\n
