\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n \t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n Luca Guadagnino<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out about his movie Artificial<\/em><\/strong> being dropped by Amazon MGM Studios. <\/p>\n The 54-year-old filmmaker\u2019s upcoming film was nearly finished when it was recently released<\/a> by the studio. <\/p>\n During an interview on Italian news show Otto e Mezzo<\/em> on Friday (June 26), Luca<\/strong> addressed his movie being dropped. <\/p>\n \u201c[I] can\u2019t say too much because we are right in the middle of this situation,\u201d he said, via TheWrap<\/a><\/em>, when asked why \u201cthe subject of artificial intelligence in today\u2019s America is considered dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n He adds that the central to the movie\u2019s story is what he calls the tech oligarchy\u2019s \u201ctruly radical control\u201d of \u201cthe very identity of places like the United States and the entire world.\u201d<\/p>\n Artificial<\/em> has been described as a \u201ccomedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence,\u201d with Andrew Garfield<\/strong> starring as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u201cWhat matters most to me is how people are completely changing the face of things \u2014 not just society in terms of consumption and how we interact with these tools, but the very identity of places like the United States and the entire world,\u201d Luca<\/strong> shared. \u201cAnd that is indeed what is happening. Indeed, this small oligarchy \u2014 which nonetheless exercises truly radical control \u2014 [is central to the story].\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThe film was shot partly in San Francisco \u2014 a wonderful city, one of the great, distinguished cities of the United States, known to everyone as the city of Alfred Hitchcock<\/strong>\u2019s films,\u201d Luca <\/strong>added. \u201cThe city presented extraordinary contrasts: a place of great beauty but also of deep despair, with so many homeless people \u2014 so many living under the influence of fentanyl \u2014 while these wonderful, silent, self-driving cars glided right past them. To me, that right there is the perfect image to describe the theme; it is the perfect image.\u201d<\/p>\n Luca<\/strong> hopes that Artificial<\/em> will find a new studio home and be seen by audiences, likening it to the 2003 cancellation of The Reagans<\/em> by CBS. <\/p>\n \u201cThese are industrial-political issues \u2014 and not for the first time,\u201d the filmmaker said. \u201cI read a great article yesterday recalling how, back in 2003, CBS canceled a major drama about the Reagans<\/strong> due to pressure from Republicans \u2014 it was actually canceled, only to air later on a smaller channel.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cTo me, the issue isn\u2019t artificial intelligence itself \u2014 that is, the application or tool used to generate \u2018knowledge products\u2019 or expressive content, like research, videos, or images,\u201d Luca<\/strong> says. \u201cFrom one perspective, it\u2019s just a technological gadget \u2014 and not a particularly sophisticated one, at that; it\u2019s full of flaws, though it will likely improve over time.
