The former Friends actress and the Snow Patrol musician \u2013 who were briefly engaged \u2013 are believed to have amicably split late last year because they started living \u201cdifferent lives\u201d.<\/p>\n
A source told the Mail On Sunday: \u201cJohnny speaks incredibly highly of Courteney. They had a very deep relationship and they remain extremely amicable. They are great friends and care about each other very much.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was not an ugly split. They had simply reached a point where they were living different lives.\u201d<\/p>\n
Courteney is best known for her role as Monica Gellar in sitcom Friends and her portrayal of Gale Weathers in the Scream film franchise.<\/p>\n
\nShe was previously married to her Scream co-star David Arquette and the couple share daughter Coco, 22, together.<\/p>\n
\nCourteney and David got married in June 1999, officially separated in October 2010 and their divorce went through in May 2013.<\/p>\n
\nSpeaking previously on NBC\u2019s Running Wild With Bear Grylls, Courteney opened up about the split, saying: “I think that we were such good friends. We found ourselves leading separate lives and just coexisting and being great friends, but not having the intimacy that…is so important in a relationship. I think you really need to work in a relationship, and I think that we tried. We’re just really different, too. I’m the polar opposite of him. That can be great for a lot of things, but I need this kind of real, one-on-one connection. And I don’t know. I don’t know.<\/p>\n
\n“It wasn’t a dramatic ending. It was more of a…just, I don’t know. I’ve really been…No one’s ever asked me in this way, so I haven’t really thought about it like this,” she said. “I mean, as divorces go, I would say it’s one of the better ones. For sure. We’re good co-parents together.”<\/p>\n
\nCourteney and Johnny got engaged in 2014 after six months of dating but split the following year.<\/p>\n
\nThey reconciled in 2016 and Courteney insisted they were both determined to make the relationship work.<\/p>\n
\nShe told Bear Grylls: “We were engaged for over a year and then we broke up. There’s something about…you know, he’s from Ireland. And the way he regards love is precious. We have to treat it in a different way. It’s more special. You coddle it. So, I didn’t know how to regard love the way he does. And it definitely made a lot of mistakes that I see, whether it’s co-dependency or people-pleasing. I didn’t know how to bring it in. It was always external. I definitely have learned a lot, and no matter what, I will be a better person from that breakup, even though it was so brutal.”<\/p>\n
\nThey were first introduced by mutual friends, including Ed Sheeran, whom Johnny has worked with on songs including Shape Of You, Photograph, Galway Girl, Bad Habits, and Shivers.<\/p>\n
